Eric Amoateng is one of the most popular and richest Teacher who was born on February 19, 1953 in Ghana. Amoateng was born in Ghana on the 19th of February 1953. He completed the secondary schooling at Nkoranza Anglican School in Nkoranza in Ghana, where he completed his O-levels. He later was enrolled in the Nkoranza Training College in Nkoranza to complete his A-level studies which he completed in 1973. Then, he was enrolled in at the Nkoranza Teacher Training College from which he became teacher. A few years later, he enrolled in at the University of Ghana, obtaining an honorary degree in the field of religion, in 1992.
Amoateng and the Adjei initially pleaded not to be guilty of conspiring to distribute narcotics after being they were brought before a judge. Adjei was later able to change his plea and plead guilty. After that, a new charge was filed against Amoateng. Then, in August of 2006, a 3rd count that included “distributing a controlled narcotic substance of about a kilogram or more containing heroin” was filed against Amoateng.
Following his arrest, there was a long debate as to whether Amoateng should remain MP for Nkoranza North. Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, Majority Chief Whip, maintained that “until the case is disposed off he remains a suspect and that the allegation would have to be substantiated”. While the majority leader in parliament announced that the government would hold the fort for the MP, the opposition insisted that a by-election be held to replace him. This went on for more than ten months. One of his sons, Augustine Akwasi Amoateng, defended his father’s innocence in April 2006. Amoateng eventually sent a letter of resignation around May 2006 to parliament but this was rejected on procedural grounds. The Speaker of Parliament, Ebenezer Sekyi-Hughes, directed on January 30, 2007, that the question of Amoateng’s long absence from parliament be revisited. However, he sent a resignation letter dated February 4, 2007, to the Speaker of the Parliament of Ghana which was accepted.
On March 19, 2007, Amoateng changed his plea to guilty. He was sentenced on December 12, 2007 to ten years in jail. He served his sentence at the Moshannon Valley Correctional Center in Pennsylvania, United States.

Amoateng was detained within his native United States of America on November 12th in 2005. Amoateng had traveled to the USA via the Emirates Airline flight to the John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) along with an acquaintance, Nii Okai Adjei. The purpose of the trip was to purchase wristwatches for selling in Ghana with US$9,000 confiscated from Amoateng. Seven containers of pottery that arrived in Newark Liberty International Airport from London and was destined to JFK one day prior and were discovered to contain the equivalent of 136 grams of heroin. The estimated street value of the drugs was approximately $6 million. Amoateng along with Adjei were watched by security officers while they collected the cargo, and later took it to a self-storage site in Staten Island. They were detained the following day, when they attempted to check the cargo. Amoateng failed to claim diplomatic immunity after his arrest. They were accused of “conspiracy with intent to distribute heroin”.
Amoateng unsuccessfully contested in his New Patriotic Party (NPP) candidate for the Nkoranza constituency in 2000 amid some controversy. Many were reported to be wary of his wealth. There was also a report that in 2001, Amoateng had been accused of fraud in the process of obtaining visas. Amoateng quit his chieftaincy in 2004 in order to contest for the election for the House of Representatives on the ticket of the NPP and opted to adopt Bomini in the adjacent Nkoranza North constituency in the Nkoranza District of the Brong Ahafo region in Ghana as his hometown. His candidature in the Nkoranza North constituency was challenged by the Sunyani High Court in 2004 however the case was ultimately dismissed. He received 46.9 percent of votes by an average of 22.3 percent to become the first member of the Parliament for the newly formed Nkoranza North constituency, from 7 January 2005.
By-elections to replace Amoateng were finally held on March 13, 2007, 16 months after his arrest. The seat was won by Derek Oduro, a retired army major, who was sworn in on March 21, 2007.
