Her solo debut came the 1st of January, 1986, with the smash song Winter Opera Glasses, which was a top-ten hit in the Oricon charts and sold more than 300,000 copies. It was the highest-selling single ever for a debut single by the first female solo artist, up until Oricon changed their rules on what is considered to be as a “debut” for people who were previously part of a group. Nitta was given the name “The Million Dollar Smile” on the covers of her singles as well as her smiling face was often referred to as “Nitta Trump”, due to the astronomical prices she earned because of her fame. Together with many of the original members of Onyanko Club, Nitta released the single, Shōmikigen (ショーミキゲン ) in 2002. On December 5 that same year, the newly reunited members performed the title song as well as Don’t Make Me Take Off My Sailor Suit during the 2002 FNS Kayōsai event on Fuji TV. Takashi Okamura, one half of the comedy duo Ninety-nine, is a huge fan of Nitta, and she performed in the “Uta no Onēsan” (歌のお姉さん ) section of his Tobukusuri variety show. Several years later, during the “Fuji TV 24-hour Police” parody segment of the Mecha-Mecha Iketeru! variety show, Nitta’s husband was “shamefully arrested” as the “Onyanko Thief” (due to his having married Nitta). In a segment for the same show in 1999, Nitta fan and tarento Thane Camus and owarai duo Asarido visited Nitta’s home.
Nitta made her debut appearance on television as the 4th member of Onyanko Club in April 1985 by appearing as a guest on their Fuji TV variety show Yuyake Nyan Nyan. Although she initially wanted to leave show business shortly after she started, she suddenly became the senior Onyanko Club member the day of April 25, 1985 in the wake of the Shukan Bunshun Smoking Scandal in which five members (including the initial three of the group) from Onyanko Club were fired.
