Erel Margalit (Hebrew: ArAl mrglyt ; born January 1, 1961) is an Israeli social and high-tech businessman. He is the co-founder as well as the Executive Chairman for Jerusalem-based venture capital company Jerusalem Venture Partners (JVP) as well as also the founder of two non-profit groups “Bakehila” and “Israel Initiative 2020” which established seven areas of excellence that integrate education and technology. He was an elected Member of the Knesset for the Labor Party, from election in January 2013 until his resignation in October of 2017. Under Margalit’s guidance, JVP has raised over $1.4 billion in nine funds that span the entire spectrum of venture capital. He also has been the main force behind some of the largest exits from Israel. Forbes the world’s leading business publication selected Margalit as its top-ranked venture capitalist from outside the United States on its famous “Midas (The Golden Touch) List.” The Marker Magazine named him the most successful venture capitalist of Israel.
The year 1993 was the time Erel Margalit established the JVP investment fund. He developed a model that combines an active management method and a plan to create one of the largest markets in international commerce. Under his direction, JVP has been instrumental in the transformation of hundreds of high-tech companies to global companies operating in Israel and Europe, the United States, Europe and Asia. Under his direction the JVP Fund currently runs investments in the amount of $1.4 billion in eight funds, which span the entire spectrum of venture capital. It also has managed some of the most significant exits from Israel. They include those of the $4.8 billion purchase of Chromatis for Lucent Technologies, the listing and sale of Netro for $5.5 billion as well as for instance, the NASDAQ listing and eventual selling of Cogent Communications (NASDAQ: CCOI with a current value of $2.7 billion) as well as the listing and eventual sale of QlikTech for $2.6 billion (NASDAQ QLIK) and the listing of CyberArk for $2.5 billion (NASDAQ: CyberArk). After returning to Israel in the year 1990 Margalit was employed in the Jerusalem Development Authority under Uzi Wexler. In 1969 the year 1969, when Margalit was just eight years old the family was sent on a mission trip to Detroit, Michigan where his father was the headmaster of an nearby Hebrew school. In High School in Michigan, Erel became a point guard for a regional basketball squad. After his return in Israel in 1971 the family settled in Karmiel prior to moving into Jerusalem. He was a student at Rene Cassin High School and continued to play basketball in the school. Recognizing his talent resulted in an invitation to be a part of an Israeli youngsters’ team however He declined the offer in favor of working in the IDF military unit. He was a part of the Brigade’s “Orev” unit as an operational officer, eventually achieving his rank as a sergeant major. In 1982, as a reservist and 1983, he was a soldier for the First Lebanon War with the IDF’s anti-tank airborne division.
Margalit has studied philosophical studies along with English literature at Hebrew University of Jerusalem, where he met his eventual wife. In 1985, Margalit moved from Jerusalem to New York to attend Columbia University where he pursued an advanced degree in logic and philosophy. In the course of his studies, he was introduced to Michael Porter’s “The Competitive Advantage of Nations,” which informed his dissertation for doctoral study on the subjectof “The Entrepreneur as a Leader in the Historical Process.” that he wrote in 2007.
In 2002, Marglit founded the social organization Bakehila (בקהילה “In the Community” in Hebrew) as a means of reducing the socio-economic gap affecting disadvantaged children in Jerusalem. Bakehila runs educational programs in lower socioeconomic neighborhoods of Jerusalem with the goal of raising the students’ academic achievements, and promoting the children’s personal and interpersonal growth. Thousands of students from Jerusalem have attended the program during its first eight years. In 2012, Bakehila opened an educational enrichment center in the Arab neighborhood of Beit Safafa. In 2018, Bakehila began working in underprivileged neighborhoods in Kiryat Shmona.

Erel Margalit was born in kibbutz Na’an, the eldest of three siblings. His father, Itzik Margalit, was an officer in the IDF Armored Corps and one of the founders of moshav Kfar Haim, and his mother, Mickey, was a founding member of moshav Avihayil. On his mother’s side, he is descended from Jews who immigrated to what was then Ottoman Palestine from Bulgaria in the 19th century, prior to the beginning of the First Aliyah. He is a descendant of Shmuel Tagir, one of the founders of Tel Aviv.
