He received his education at Stiftung Louisenlund in Schleswig- Holstein. After obtaining an Abitur certificate and finishing his military service in the German Air Force, he became a shipping broker after completing an apprenticeship at one of the Hamburg shipping firm Ernst Russ. In addition to other jobs, Rickmers subsequently worked as an agent for ships at Harper Petersen & Co. in London. Rickmers was a graduate student of the University of California, Santa Barbara where he earned an M.A. qualification from the field of Religious Studies from 2015 to 2017.
In the year 2016 Rickmers created his foundation, the International Foundation for the Humanities and Social Change. The foundation funds researchers at University of California, Santa Barbara as well as at the Ca’ Foscari university of Venice and The University of Cambridge and the Humboldt University of Berlin.
Rickmers is an active part of the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD). After in the year 2011 Hamburg general election in 2011, he was elected an elected part of the Hamburg Parliament. As members of the Hamburg Parliament, Rickmers chaired the committee on innovation, economics and media, as well as an active member of the budget committee as well as the public enterprise committee. In 2013, he resigned from politics.
