In his last year of high school, he received an offer from his hometown club Montevideo Wanderers and joined after graduating. His elegant behaviour and playing style earned him the nickname “El Príncipe”, a nickname inherited from Hannibal Ciocca, a former Wanderers player. He made his debut for the senior team in 1982, competing in a friendly tournament in India. The following year, as a member of the Uruguay squad in the 1983 Copa América, he scored his first international goal in a 2–0 victory over Brazil.
