Emma Bull (born December 13 1954) is an American science fiction and fantasy writer. Her books include the Hugo as well as Nebula nominated Bone Dance and the urban fantasy War for the Oaks. Her other works include the series of anthologies that are that are set in Liavek, an open universe she co-created together with her husband Will Shetterly. As a musician, singer as well as a guitarist, she was part of the Minnesota-based folk/rock groups Cats Laughing and The Flash Girls.
The post-apocalyptic science fiction book Bone Dance was nominated for the Hugo, Nebula, and World Fantasy Awards. She was part in the group of writers The Scribblies, which included her husband, Will Shetterly, as in addition to Pamela Dean, Kara Dalkey, Nate Bucklin, Patricia Wrede and Steven Brust.
Bull has also participated in Terri Windling’s Borderland shared universe, which is the setting of her 1994 novel Finder.
With Steven Brust, Bull wrote Freedom and Necessity (1997), an epistolary novel set during the 19th century Chartist movement of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland.
From the early 1990s until in 2001 Bull was also a guitarist and singer during her “goth-folk” duo The Flash Girls together with whom she released three albums.

In the late 1980s and the early the 1990s Bull was a member of the rock-folk band from Minneapolis, Cats Laughing. Bull is featured on the band’s two studio albums, as well as the forthcoming live CD as well as video of the reunion gig Cats Laughing: A Long Time Gone (2016).
