Emily Carmichael (born January 27 in 1982) is an American screenwriter, director of film and animator. Short films she’s directed been screened in competitions during Sundance, Tribeca, SXSW, Slamdance, and other US and International film festivals. Carmichael co-wrote the screenplay of the 2018 science-fiction sequel Pacific Rim: Uprising, and will be the director of the adaptation film version Lumberjanes in 20th Century Studios.

Films of her short The Hunter and the Swan discuss Their Meeting premiered at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival and was broadcast in the inaugural installment of KQED TV series Film School Shorts. The film received it the Grand Jury Prize at the 2012 Science Fiction Fantasy Short Film Festival as well as the Third Prize at 2012’s First Run Film Festival, and a student Grant by the National Board of Review. Filmmaker, in a critique of Sundance shorts, described this film “sweet, beautiful, clever, and fun” and “magic and original”.

She graduated from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts with an MFA in Film in 2012. In her final year she was a finalist for Tisch’s Wasserman Award.

Filmmaker called her one of the 25 New Faces of Independent Film in its 2013 Summer issue. That same year Fox Digital Studio optioned Carmichael’s screenplay The Licking County Giants.

The short movie of Carmichael The Ghost and Us, featuring Maria Dizzia, premiered at the 2009 Cinevegas Film Festival and won the award for Best Short at the Project Twenty1’s Philadelphia Filmathon. The film was screened across North America and Europe in 2011 as part of the Viscera Film Festival, a touring horror film festival designed for female filmmakers. On the road, Carmichael received awards for the awards for Best Screenplay and the award for Best Comedic Horror Short.
