Emel Mathlouthi is one of the most popular and richest Singer who was born on January 11, 1982 in Tunis, Tunis Governorate, Tunisia. Emel Mathlouthi began singing and acting when she was age 8 in an area near her home in Tunis. She composed her first song when she was just 10 years old. She realized her impressive vocal abilities at the age of 15, supported by her peers and inspired by the great pop artists from the 90’s. She found a great refuge in heavy metal later and also in gothic rock and began her first band in metal at a college in Tunis at the age of 19. After a few years, deeply impressed by the music and lyrics that of Joan Baez after her bandmate performed “The Boxer” for her after which she left the group and began writing songs that were political, and expressing her anger at her lack of chances as well as the indifference of her fellow Tunisians and friends, like “Ya Tounes Ya Meskina” (“Poor Tunisia”). In 2006, she was a finalist for the Prix RMC Moyen-Orient Music competition. She made the decision to relocate into Paris, France in 2008 after the Tunisian government banned her music from the radio and television. Although she was barred from Tunisian radio, bootlegs of her live shows in France were available online in Tunisia. Following the death of Mohamed Bouazizi she dedicated an Arabic version of the Joan Baez song “Here’s To You” to him.
Emel Mathlouthi dropped her debut, Kelmti Horra, in January of 2012. The album was inspired in part by Joan Baez, Massive Attack and Bjork. As a musician who is aware of the political climate and activist, the songs in the album are a declaration of obligation to speak out about any injustice Emel has witnessed in her home country of Tunisia. As she sings about human rights and an improved world, the popularity of the album has enabled her more accessible to people across the globe. The track, “Kelmti Horra” (My Word is Free) was described by many to be “the anthem of the Arab Spring,” it is Emel’s most well-known song to date. The huge performance of the song has led her to perform it on the 11th of December 2015 at the ceremony for the award of the Nobel Peace Prize in Oslo which was awarded to the Tunisian National Dialogue Quartet.
Ensen (Human) was released on February 24, 2017 by Partisan Records. The album was recorded in seven countries including Iceland, Sweden, France, and the US. Producers of the album include the former Björk collaborator, Icelandic producer Valgeir Sigurðsson and Emel’s main collaborator Franco-Tunisian producer Amine Metani. The first single off the album, “Ensen Dhaif” (Human, Helpless Human), was named as “best new track” by Pitchfork on February 16,

In 2017 she performed returned to Tunisia for her first concert there in five years, headlining the prestigious Carthage Festival. That summer she also performed at the Beitaddine Festival in Lebanon, and the SummerStage festival in Central Park, New York City.
Mathlouthi was in the film No Land’s Song by Ayat Najafi. She became the first female to sing solo within Iran from 1979. The music she composed has been featured in soundtracks for a variety of films.

In the month of July, 2012 she held an unforgettable show at Baghdad, Iraq.
