Tumwine also holds further military qualifications from the military academy in Vystry, in the Soviet Union.
The year 1978 was when Elly Tumwine ended his teaching career in order to be a part of FRONASA forces under the leadership of Yoweri Museveni, to fight his Idi Amin’s regime. In 1981 the year that Museveni was in the bush to establish his own National Resistance Army (NRA), Elly Tumwine went with the NRA. The report says that he opened the gun during the National Resistance Army War, which brought into power the National Resistance Army and the National Resistance Movement to the powerhouse of Uganda in the year 1986. During the battle between NRA along with the UNLA, Tumwine sustained facial injuries that resulted in the loss of vision within one of his eyes. When he was injured in 1984, Tumwine became the Commanding Officer of the Army which that he held until 1987 at which point he was succeeded by general Salim Saleh.
