Ellen Buchleitner (nee Kiessling, born on February 17, 1968) is a German former track and field athlete who was a middle distance specialist. She represented East Germany, she won an Olympic bronze medal for the 800m during the 1989 European Indoor Championships and a bronze medal in the 800m race at the 1989 World Indoor Championships, before getting the silver medal in the 1500m during the 1989 European Championships. She was awarded three East German national titles.

She did not compete in the 1993 season however she returned in 1994 to take back her outdoor and indoor championships against Antje Beggerow as well as Simone Weidner, respectively. In her last season of major international competition, she placed high but did not win the gold medal. She placed in fifth place at the 1994 European Athletics Indoor Championships, fourth at the 1994 European Cup and seventh at the 1994 European Athletics Championships. She was a member of ASV Koln, the ASV Koln sports club that year, and was a part of the national championship-winning 3×800 relay team.

She did not compete in major championships after 1994, but claimed her eighth German title in the 1500 m in 1995 (bringing her national title total to eleven).

Following Germany’s unification in 1991, Germany after the unification of Germany, she started competing in the newly formed German side in. She became the first country’s post-unification 1500m champion victory at the German Indoor Athletics Championships. The time she won of 4:05.50 minutes is (as in 2015) an all-time record for the championship. Then she followed it up with winning in similar distances at German Athletics Championships later that year. She took home a 1500m bronze medal for hosts at the 1991 European Cup in Frankfurt before taking fifth place in the 1991 World Championships in Athletics. She continued her outdoor and indoor national titles during the 1992 season. She continued to compete for Germany in the 1992 Summer Olympics. But, in the Olympics in Barcelona she did not finish in the first round , and was eliminated. It was her first Olympic performance and her final major appearance at the world championships. The 1992 season ended by winning the 5K race in Natternbach.

In Freital, Bezirk Dresden, she was a member of Dresdner SC and started working with the athletics coach of the club, Klaus Muller. Her first international gold medal in the sport of East Germany came on home on the ground in Cottbus in which she won the bronze medal in the 800 meters in the 1985 European Athletics Junior Championships. It was the 1986 World Junior Championships in Athletics was next and at that event she finished sixth in the 800m but she was able to help team East German 4×400 metres relay team win bronze by competing through the warm-up stage. She started running longer distances, and she won her first Willi Sanger Memorial 5K race in 1988.

Kiessling won her first national championship at the East German Athletics Championships in 1989. This year was the most successful year of her athletic career. Her first accomplishment was getting her first senior medal in the European Athletics Indoor Championships, finishing second just behind Romania’s Doina Melinte. In the following month, she set an indoor record of 1:59.68 minutes during the 1989 IAAF World Indoor Championships – which earned her the bronze medal, as the three runners who finished in the top three places were all within a fraction of a second and were only beaten by her fellow countryman Christine Wachtel and Soviet runner Tatyana Grebenchuk. In the outdoor competition, she recorded three more lifetime records: 1:59.41 minutes for the 800m, 4:04.44 minutes for the 1500m and 8:46.99 minutes for 3000m. The 1500m time that she set at East Berlin, ranked her seventh overall in the world for the time at that time. She was fourth in the race in the European Cup (1500 m) and the 1989 IAAF World Cup (3000 m).

After she retired from the sport, she began working as a make-up artist. She and Michael Buchleitner (an Austrian runner) married in 1994 and the pair had a daughter in 1999 and a son in 2008.
