She was not able to be a part of at the 2014 Winter Olympics for Venezuela in freestyle and skeleton skiing and was able to compete in at the 2018 Winter Olympics in the women’s halfpipe. She finished last.
Swaney was selected for 2018’s Winter Olympics representing Hungary in half- pipe skiing. Since 2013, she has attended every World Cup qualifying events over the two Olympic qualifying years. She also attended in 2017 she competed at the World Championship in Sierra Nevada, Spain. To qualify for the Olympics athletes had to be among the top 30 of the FIS Freestyle Ski World Cup competition as well as FIS Freestyle World Ski Championships and earn at least 50.00 FIS points. Swaney did this by participating in competitions that had fewer than 30 participants, and one event in China with fifteen participants (in which she was ranked 13th). 13 of the top 30 places were due to her being on time with a solid performance, not falling, and registering scores. Because of her choice of events her ranking was 34th prior for the Olympics. The Olympic Quota system was also helpful in her qualification. Women were allowed to compete in half-pipe competitions. to participate in half-pipe competitions however, there were limits to the number of skiers a country could send. The maximum number of skiers a nation could send was twenty-six (with up to 14 males and 14 females) in all freestyle skiing events. Thus, while it was true that the United States had six women placed in the top 20 athletes in the world for halfpipe skiing but only four were permitted to compete at the Olympics in accordance with the system of quotas. Because of the quota system and accidents, Swaney’s score 34 earned her a spot as a participant in the Olympics.
In the 2018 Winter Olympics, Swaney competed in the women’s half-pipe which was described by the organizers as an “perfectly mediocre run”, not falling. She was able to score 30.00 as well as 31.40, “barely attempting a trick” in each one of the two races. She was last in the race, 13.60 points behind Laila Friis-Salling, a native of Denmark who was a fall in both the qualifying races. The incident led to the Hungarian Olympic Committee (MOB) to reconsider its selection procedure as well as possible modifications to the system of quotas.
