Shepherd was the child of two pastors from The Salvation Army. From a young age she was used to being a part of brass bands and choirs. She studied at the conservatories of Canada and France and then earned an education in jazz piano at McGill University in Montreal after thinking about the possibility of a profession in therapy.

A heavy Falls in the Dark (2010) comprised only one cover track which was a remake version of “Danny’s Song”. Shepherd created the album, with the exception of the debut single “Seven Bucks”, that was produced in collaboration with Japanese DJ Mitsu the Beats. Shepherd’s album The Signal (2014) consisted of ten original songs on topics as varied as motherhood, Monsanto, witchcraft, and war, and featured guests such as Benin-born guitarist and composer Lionel Loueke and drummer Larnell Lewis. Shepherd has played at jazz clubs across a variety of countries from the Tokyo’s Cotton Club to London’s Jazz Cafe and the Cliff Bell’s in Detroit. She has played at various festivals across each side of the Atlantic and has performed at festivals like the Montreal Jazz Festival, ELB Jazz and the North Sea Jazz Festival. In 2009 she received an invitation from British musician Jamie Cullum to open for him in a sold out show in The Hollywood Bowl.
