Elizabeth Maria Plater Zyberk was born Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, the daughter of Josaphat Plater-Zyberk (1906-1994) who was architect and his wife Maria Meysztowski (1911-2000), who was a professor in French in France at Villanova University. Plater-Zyberk was a graduate of the Sacred Heart Academy in Bryn Mawr and graduated with an undergraduate degree in urban and architectural plan in 1972 from Princeton University (1972) and her master’s degree in architecture at Yale University’s Yale School of Architecture (1974).

In the year 1980, Duany and Plater-Zyberk founded Duany Plater-Zyberk & Company (DPZ) which was based in Miami. DPZ became a leading force in the national movement of New Urbanism and distinguished itself by constructing traditional towns and transform existing suburbs into living downtowns. The firm first earned global recognition during the late 1980s as the creator for Seaside, Florida, and has produced codes and designs for more than 200 cities, town plans and community revitalization plans.

Plater-Zyberk was first a teacher in the University of Miami School of Architecture in 1979. It was the beginning of the beginning of a lengthy and profitable partnership. After establishing a graduate program that focused on Suburb as well as Town Planning in the year 1988 she continued to study the current issues of urban development and reconstruction in collaboration with faculty and students. She was dean of the University’s School of Architecture from 1995 until 2013. As dean she enlisted the architectural firm Leon Krier to design his first public structure located in Florida in the architecture school (his sole other buildings in America are his home at Seaside as well as a meeting room within the Duany Plater-Zyberk resort planned by Windsor). She also served as head of the school’s Center for Urban Community and Design which has organized and promoted many design projects to benefit communities across South Florida. In the fall of 2008, Plater-Zyberk accepted into the Iron Arrow Honor Society, the most prestigious Honor earned by the University of Miami. The year 2014 was the first time she received the Arts & Culture Award by the Coral Gables Community Foundation.
