Elizabeth Knox is one of the most popular and richest Novelist who was born on February 15, 1959 in Wellington, Wellington Region, New Zealand. In the was the same year that Knox released The Angel’s Cut The Angel’s Cut, the sequel of The Vintner’s Luck. The novel follows the story of Xas following the events of The Vintner’s Luck which is set during 1930’s Hollywood. In 2013, she published Mortal Fire (another Southland book for teens) as well as Wake one of her latest books.

She was awarded her Victoria University of Wellington Writing Scholarship in 1997. She wrote her book The Vintner’s Luck was published in 1998. The novel chronicles the life of a winemaker who was a peasant, Sobran Jodeau, and his relationship with the deceased angel Xas set on the year 1808 in Burgundy, France, and runs for 55 years. The story was inspired by the vision she had in a frenzied dream while she was suffering from pneumonia. It was a novel that Vintner’s Luck won Knox widespread reviews and awards, and also increased her visibility within New Zealand and beyond.

She also published a collection of non-fiction, The Love School: Personal Essays, which in 2009 won a Montana Book Award for Biography.

In 2009 the film adaptation of The Vintner’s Luck directed and co-written by Niki Caro was released. The film was almost universally panned at the 34th Annual Toronto International Film Festival. Knox was disappointed at the direction the movie took as she felt Niki Caro “took out what the book was actually about”, referring to the romantic relationship between Sobran and Xas which was a core aspect of the novel. Her sister, Sara Knox, who is gay, was also upset about the film version. Knox’s bad experience with the film made her pull out of a potential film contract with NZ filmmaker Jonathan King for her young adult fantasy series, the Dreamhunter Duet.

In 1988, Fergus Barrowman, Nigel Cox, Knox, and Damien Wilkins along with the help from Bill Manhire, Alan Preston and Andrew Mason, co-founded the literary journal Sport. Knox is one its editors , and was a frequent contributor for the publication.

In 1983 in 1983, when Knox was just 24, she earned her master’s degree program with a major in English Literature at Victoria University of Wellington. In the year following she began work on After Z-Hour in Bill Manhire’s Original Composition course at Victoria. The novel was inspired by a vivid memory she had from when she was 11 years old, and was thrown from a tree of walnuts at ANZAC Day. While in the hospital , she heard a conversation taking place of an elder man with her father on Passchendaele along with life at the Salient in 1917. Bill Manhire encouraged her to write her story, and said he’d prefer to see the novel completed rather than her academic education. After that, Z-Hour became a bestseller in 1987 it was published through Victoria University Press and Knox was awarded her degree at Victoria University of Wellington the following year. Knox was also awarded the Young Writers Bursary award in the same year.

After The Vintner’s Luck Knox published Black Oxen , Billie’s Kiss, and Daylight. Between 2005 and 2007 her first young adult series, The Dreamhunter Duet, was published. Described as a “Mansfield-meets-Mahy fantasy” and, once again, Knox was praised for her audacious imagination and ingeniously constructed tales.
