In 2002, in the 8th grade in Kitsilano Secondary School, Liz was a javelin thrower in Caroline Wittrin’s class for gym. The following year, she was the winner of the Vancouver City’s championship with throwing 17 meters. The cameraman finished shooting the event and she apologized immediately afterwards. She said, “I’m not going to throw a javelin at someone and not see if they’re OK. I don’t feel like that’s polite.”
In the spring of 2011, Liz decided to take the time off from her kinesiology studies at UBC and to dedicate all of her time to training. Liz moved towards Lethbridge, Alberta to train at the National Training Centre for throws in Lethbridge, Alberta with coach Lawrence Steinke. Following the London Olympics Liz returned to her studies and also trained in Lethbridge. Liz did not participate in the 2013 season of competition due to a back problem however, following an intense training regimen, she returned to competition in 2014.
