Stefanik defeated Matt Doheny in the 2014 Republican primary election, 61 to 39 percent, She faced Aaron Woolf, the Democratic Party nominee, and Matt Funiciello, the Green Party nominee, in the general election on November 4. Stefanik defeated Woolf and Funiciello, gaining 55.2% to their 33.5% and 10.6%, respectively. At age 30, she became the youngest woman ever elected to Congress.

After having graduated from Harvard after which she worked in the administration of the president George W. Bush, serving as a staff member for his Domestic Policy Council. Stefanik was employed as the Office of the White House Chief of Staff for Joshua Bolten, Bush’s second deputy chief of staff. She also assisted in the preparation of an official Republican campaign platform for 2012 and was the director of the new media department in Tim Pawlenty’s Presidential exploratory group, as well as at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies as well as the Foreign Policy Initiative. Stefanik was in charge of Wisconsin Paul Ryan’s congressional debate preparations during the presidential race in 2012. Following the loss of Romney-Ryan at the end of the election she returned to the upstate of New York and joined her parents’ company.
