Mary Elise Ray (born February 6 1982) is an American gymnast who competed for her country in the United States at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney and at the 1999 World Championships. She is currently director of gymnastics for the University of Washington.
The U.S. team was given their bronze medals in an exclusive ceremony before the competition for men during the U.S. Championships in August 2010.
On September 22, 2011, Elise joined the Washington Huskies gymnastics program as an assistant coach, replacing her former Michigan teammate Shanna Hannan. She is reunited with head coach Joanne Bowers, who was an assistant coach at Michigan.
On May 27, 2016, Ray was named the new head coach of the Huskies program following the resignation of previous coach Joanne Bowers; she has been with the University of Washington for five years.
Following Sydney, Elise attended the University of Michigan on a full athletic scholarship. Here, she studied English. She concluded a highly impressive NCAA career by taking her team to the Super Six finals in 2005 and securing an award of silver on beam. Prior to that, she was competed (with Onnie Willis of UCLA) for the all-around championship in 2001, and also won gold for the beam balance (2002) and the uneven bars (2004) competitions. She was active for three years with Cirque du Soleil in which she was part of the Cadre team for O, the Las Vegas resident show O. She also appeared on The Cirque Show called Love. Ray is also occasionally an color commentator on Big Ten Network broadcasts of gymnastics for women. She was a coach at the Carroll Gymnastics Center in Hampstead, Maryland, afterward.

Ray was a student at Steven’s Forrest elementary school situated in Columbia, Maryland and went on to coach at Hill’s Angels Club at Hill’s Angels in Maryland in the direction of Kelli Hill as head coach for Olympic gold medalists Dominique Dawes and Courtney Kupets. Ray was awarded the first US national team spot in 1996 as a junior and put on a powerful performance at her first international appearance at the 1996 Junior Pan American Championships, finishing second in the all-around competition and winning gold in the floor and uneven bars exercise. She continued to be a star in the years to follow winning the silver medal for uneven bars during the 1998 Goodwill Games. The 1999 World Championships in Tianjin, China, Ray was the most highly-ranked American of the competition placing eighth in the all-around.
Ray took home two times at she won the US National Championships and the Olympic Trials in 2000. In the Sydney Olympics, Ray was the sole American woman who qualified for the final event of the balance beam. Despite this the fact that she faced significant difficulties during the Olympics. For the All- around Finals officials placed the vault equipment 5 centimeters too low. the problem was not rectified until half way over. This change totally altered gymnasts’ postflight and entry and led to several accidents. Ray was among the gymnasts that vaulted before the mistake was discovered. she fell on both the warm-up as well as competition vaults. In one of her warm-up vaults, she fell just only a few inches from falling on her head. While Ray did not suffer any injuries but the event caused her to be shaken and she also fell off of beam. It’s impossible to determine how much her performance in the future were affected. Gymnasts who had vaulted using the wrong apparatus were asked to re- do their vaults after the competition. Ray was graciously accepted and finished 13th with her updated score. Like many gymnasts who used the wrong vault Ray was of the opinion that this could have a negative impact on her performance. She opined during an interview after the competition on NBC that she would have won a medal had this had not occurred. In addition, she placed eight in the beam final, which brought an end to a dismal Olympics to USA Gymnastics.
On April 28, 2010, Elise and the other women on the 2000 Olympic team were awarded the bronze medal in the team competition when it was discovered that the previous medal winners, the Chinese team, had falsified the age of team member Dong Fangxiao. As a result of the falsification, Dong’s results were nullified, and the Chinese team was stripped of the medal by the IOC.
