Souto de Moura was born in Porto, Portugal. He graduated from the Escola Superior Artística do Porto in 1976. He then attended the Escola Técnica Superior de Arquitectura de Madrid, where he earned his degree in 1981.
After graduation, Souto de Moura returned to Portugal, where he began his architectural career. He has designed a number of notable buildings, including the Municipal Stadium of Braga, the Serralves Museum of Contemporary Art and the Paula Rego Museum. In 2011, he was awarded the Pritzker Prize, considered to be architecture’s highest honor.
He was born to José Alberto Souto de Moura, a medical doctor, and wife Maria Teresa Ramos Machado. His brother was the 9th Attorney General of Portugal.
