in 2003 Irizarry received a nomination from President George W. Bush to be the United States District Judge of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of New York. Even though she was rejected by the American Bar Association determined her to be “not qualified,” she was confirmed by the Senate on June 24, 2004, and was granted her appointment the following day, on the 8th of July thus becoming the very first Hispanic judge of the Eastern District. She was named the Chief Judiciary for the Eastern District on April 15 2016. The seat she is seated in is Brooklyn. She was granted senior status on the 26th of January, 2020.

It was 2002 when Irizarry was forced to quit as judge to become Republican candidate to run for the office of Attorney General in New York, challenging Democratic incumbent Eliot Spitzer. Irizarry was the very first Latina to run for statewide office for the state of New York State. Irizarry was defeated with a margin of 66%-30 however, she ran a solid campaign in the upstate of New York. Following her election she went into private practice at the law firm Hoguet, Newman & Regal in Manhattan.

Irizarry is a native of San Sebastian, Puerto Rico she lived within The Bronx of New York City. She went to her school at the Bronx High School of Science and graduated in Yale University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1976. She then went on to graduate from Columbia Law School with a Juris Doctor in 1979. Following the law program, she was employed as an assistant district attorney within New York City, Bronx and Manhattan between 1979 and 1981. Irizarry stated that she was looking to enhance the standard of living in the communities she grew up in and she specialized in the field of drug and narcotics.

It was her position as assistant district attorneys for the Office of the Special Narcotics Prosecutor in the Bronx County District Attorney’s Office from 1981 until 1987 and later in the New York County District Attorney’s Office from 1987 until 1995. She was then appointed an adjudicator in the New York City Criminal Court from 1995 until 1997 and was an Acting Justice for the Court of Claims in Kings County from 1997 until 1998. She was then appointed to the same role in Manhattan between 1998 and 2002.

On December 15, 2010, Judge Irizarry sentenced Islamist militant and engineer Abdul Kadir, 58, of Guyana, to life in prison after the jury found him and co- defendant Russel Defreitas, a U.S. citizen born in Guyana, guilty of planning to blow up New York City’s John F. Kennedy International Airport by exploding fuel tanks and pipelines underneath it. She sentenced Defreitas to life in prison on February 17, 2011. One month previously, she had sentenced Abdel Nur, a co-defendant who pleaded guilty, to 15 years, and the following year, Kareem Ibrahim, who was tried separately, was also found guilty and given a life sentence by Judge Irizarry.
