The Blazersedge “Dontonio Wingcast” podcast is named for Wingfield. After college, and later, Wingfield encountered various personal and legal issues, including being convicted of beating the two suburb Cincinnati Police officers. He was later injured during an auto accident. Traveling to Washington to train together with the Wizards the following day Wingfield was on the road that was wet near Albany in the month of November, 1998. He was driving after he fell off his vehicle to avoid the deer. He fractured both ankles as well as the back of his neck was fractured by five bone fragments as a result of the car flipping and crashed. Wingfield was hospitalized for three months the hospital before he was able to take over the course of a year, he progressed from walker to cane and walking on his own once more.
Wingfield has a prosthesis on his left leg, which was amputated below the knee in 2010 due to complications of diabetes. He wrote a book called “Chasing Success, Finding Purpose,” which is available on Amazon.
Wingfield has nine children and says he’s a part of all of their lives. The two eldest, Ashley and Bre, grew up in Albany. Three were raised in Cincinnati – DJ was a three-time All-Ohio high school basketball player played basketball at Ohio University., Donovan Wingfield who studied music and was a former volleyball player at Tuskegee University; and Autumn ‘’Butterfly’’ Mason whom Wingfield didn’t meet until 2009, when she was thirteen. Another daughter London grew up in Texas and California and Wingfield met her when she was seven. Wingfield began coaching son Dequan at age 9 in 2004. In 2008, daughter Jay began playing. Wingfield coached their AAU teams, and that brought him to Henderson Gym, where he began his youth program. Wingfield’s youngest child, Donjuwan, a student at Douglass High in Atlanta, has stayed with Wingfield in the summers since age 7 and has participated in Wingfield’s camps.
In 1995-98, Wingfield collected a further number of regular season games, with his team, the Portland Trail Blazers. The 10th of March in 1996 in a game against Indiana Pacers, he scored an all-time high of 17 points while including seven rebounds as well as five assist (career-high match) in a 113-108 victory. His most productive month as a professional was the month of January in 1997 (his third season) when he scored double-digit points five times with a total of 14 points and 12 rebounds. This included a 14-point 2-assist 2-block match in Boston on the 31st of January.

Wingfield was recruited by the University of Cincinnati in 1993 as Bob Huggins’ best recruit to date, arriving shortly after the departure Nick Van Exel, the point guard. Wingfield was a good debut season for the Bearcats and broke the record for first-game attendance set by Oscar Robertson by scoring 30 points and 12 rebounds during his debut game against Butler. Wingfield was named Great Midwest Conference newcomer of the year. The nickname was “Baby Shaq” by those who were in the Bearcat team, Wingfield went on to average 9 rebounds and 16 points throughout the season, culminating in a 20-point , 10-rebound performance during the NCAA Tournament opening round loss to Wisconsin. He signed with an agent on the same day as the Bearcats losing in the opening round of the NCAA tournament. He was the first freshman from college in more than a quarter century to sign with a professional.
In the following year, he was chosen to the Seattle SuperSonics in the second round (37th selection all-around) in the 1994 NBA Draft, but appeared only sparingly throughout his brief National Basketball Association career; following his debut as a member of the Sonics (20 games in duration 81 minutes) He was picked to the Toronto Raptors in the 1995 expansion draft, but was subsequently dropped prior to the start of the season.
In early 1998, Wingfield was cut by the Oregon franchise, finishing the season with Spain’s Baloncesto León. In his NBA career, he played in 114 games and scored a total of 423 points. He lasted four years in the NBA, averaging 10 minutes, four points and two rebounds a game.
