In her professional career, Dong competed under a passport which listed her birthdate as being 20 January 1983. But, when she was formally certified to work in the capacity of a technical official for 2008’s Summer Olympics in Beijing, she was registered as having an birth date of 23 January 1986. Furthermore, Dong gave the same date of birth on her CV. The birth date of 1986 would have meant she was 13 in 1999 and 14 during the Olympics Two years younger than the age limit set to be a member of the International Federation of Gymnastics.

Dong Fangxiao began her gymnastics career in the early years of her life. She was on her provincial team at age of seven, and was invited to be a part of the Chinese National Team at the age of 10. In 1999, even though according to FIG regulations she was too young for a 13 years old, Dong started to compete with senior athletes on the international stage. In 1999, at the World Championships in Tianjin China, Dong helped the Chinese team to illegally win the bronze medal. She placed 6th individually in the all-around competition, fourth in floor workout final, and 7th at the final of the balance beam competition. Dong was once more incriminatedly selected for the elite Chinese group to compete in the 2000 Olympics but was too young to be competing at just 14. Her impressive performances once again assisted the Chinese team win an Olympic bronze medal at the competition for teams. Dong was able to compete in the all-around, floor and vault finals however, she was not able to earn medals for each of the three events, 25th, 6th and 7th, respectively.

Chinese sports fans were critical of the Chinese sport governing body, rather than the International Olympic Committee, as being pushed to compete underage caused her irreparable knee damage. Netease sports columnist Li Jiayang wrote “Competing for her local team in the Chinese National Games, she damaged her knee permanently, in order to win an Olympic medal for the national team, her age was hidden (I don’t dare to use the word ‘falsify’ which may cause trouble) and she has been humiliated. It’s enough to make you cry.”
