Robert Donell Nixon (born December 31st 1961, in Evergreen, North Carolina) is a American Former professional player in the outfield. He was a part or all of four seasons in Major League Baseball (MLB) from 1987 to 1990. He played three positions in the outfield usually in the center field.
Nixon started his 1988 campaign with Calgary in the first half of the season, and hit .281 during 40 contests. The team traded him for the San Francisco Giants on June 23.
Although he did not play in 1985 , and playing in the smallest number of games played in Nixon was named to his way onto the Mariners’ Opening Day roster. Nixon started the season’s opening game as Seattle’s centerfielder and leadoff hitter. He came at the plate 4 times and registering three walks as well as one stole base. Even though he was still starting as a catcher for Seattle’s Mariners, Nixon did not have the ball until game’s fifth which was a run- scoring single off Les Straker. The first day of May, with Nixon only hitting .130 He was returned to the minors which is where he was a part of the Triple-A Calgary Cannons, the Mariners most prestigious farm team. Nixon was able to return to the team in July, and came out with a respectable .250 average.

Nixon was initially selected to the Seattle Mariners in the 10th round of the 1980 MLB draft. He was a student at West Columbus High School in Cerro Gordo, North Carolina. Nixon began his professional career subsequent season playing for the Wausau Timbers of the Single-A Midwest League. He played the majority of the following two seasons in Single-A, too. In 1983, when he was with the Bakersfield Mariners Nixon stole 144 bases in just 135 games. This was one shy of his minor league record of 145 that Vince Coleman set the same year.
The year 1984 saw Nixon received a promotion to Double-A Chattanooga Lookouts, where he continued to be awe-inspiring on the field, and stole the bases of 102. But, he sustained a compound fracture to his left leg in the year 1985, that slowed his career. This injury cost him nearly two years of his career but didn’t take away the majority from his athleticism. He was able to run an 6.25 60-yard run prior to injury and after the injury, a 6.3 following.
The Giants immediately added Nixon to the major league roster. He played in 59 games over the remainder of the season, batting .348. He spent the entire 1989 season with the Giants, the only season in which he did not play in the minor leagues. He made his only postseason appearances in 1989 as well. In the 1989 World Series against the Oakland Athletics, he played in two of the four games, getting one hit in five at bats. The following year, the Giants released Nixon at the end of spring training.
