Brazier took to the outdoors for his first time however, he needed to compete in several events in order to get back to the top of his game. Brazier finished third at the SEC outdoor championships with a time of 1:46.19 which was a half second slower than Mississippi State’s Brandon McBride. In the NCAA outdoor championships, Eugene Brazier took his semi-final victory in a personal record of 1:45.07. In the final, there was another match of Brazier as well as McBride; McBride led for the majority of the time however Brazier overtook McBride with just 150 meters remaining and took the win in 1:43.55. It was the new record for collegiate athletics, American Junior and NACAC junior record, and the world junior (U20) leading the race. After finishing high school at the end of the year 2015 Brazier was accepted into Texas A&M University, where the team was led by former top-ranked runners Alleyne Francique as well as Head trainer Pat Henry. He completed the race in 1:45.92 in his first collegiate race on the 16th of January 2016 and broke the John Marshall American Junior indoor record of more than 2 seconds. His time also set an NACAC junior record and he missed the American record for collegiate by just 0.05 seconds. He was the winner of his 2016 SEC indoor championship with a time of 1:46.08 however he failed to finish his heat in the NCAA indoor championships due to a back strain.
On August 29, 2019, Brazier set a new 800-meter personal best of 1:42.70 en route to winning the Diamond League meet in Zurich, Switzerland.
Brazier made the switch to professional sports following his NCAA win after signing an endorsement agreement with Nike and giving up his remaining three years of eligibility as a collegiate athlete. Brazier placed 19th in the 800 meters in the 2016 USATF Olympic Trials in 1:48.13. Donavan Brazier returned to Coach at Texas A&M University (Grenada’s top 400-meter runners Alleyne Francique). Brazier holds the American junior record as well as the American record for the men’s 800m and has won an award at the 2019 World Championships. Brazier is currently training with Pete Julian.
In 2014, the year he was a junior in Kenowa Hills High School, Brazier took home the 800 meter race in the New Balance national scholastic championships in 1:48.61 which was an all-time Michigan State record. The times dropped during his senior year. Brazier completed in a 45.92 split on a four 400 metres relay. He also increased his best 800-meter time to 1:47.55 and he was ranked in fourth place on the record-setting nation record for high schools. Brazier was able to run 1:47.55 in June of 2015 in the 800 meters in Seattle Brooks PR. Brazier participated in the 800 meters race at 2015. USA Junior Outdoor Track and Field Championships but was exempted. In the summer of 2015, Brazier tried to get the chance to represent the United States on his first national team as an under 20 year old (U20) in the 2015 Pan American Junior Athletics Championships to participate in the 800 meters.
On October 1, 2019, Brazier won the 800m at the World Championships in Doha, Qatar. His time of 1:42.34 was a championships record and a new American record, surpassing Johnny Gray’s 1:42.60 from 1985. At the end of the season, Brazier was selected for the Jesse Owens Award.
