DeGrood was born February 14th, 1965 being the 4th son from Robert DeGrood and Joanne DeGrood. He was raised living in Faribault, Minnesota on his family’s farm. He was a student at Bethlehem Academy in Faribault and the University of Saint Thomas. He was a student at Saint John Vianney College Seminary in Saint Paul from 1983 to 1987. He then began working in the business world before coming back in 1993 The Saint Paul Seminary, where he was graduated in 1997.

On December 12 in 2019 he was appointed as the Bishop of the Diocese of Sioux Falls by Pope Francis. Since the quinquennial and in limina visits by bishops from the United States bishops were ongoing in this time and he was able to meet and visit together with Pope Francis in between his appointment and his consecration on January 13 the 13th of January, 2020. He was ordained as an episcopal bishop and was inaugurated on Feb. 13, 2020, by Bernard Hebda, Paul J. Swain as well as Andrew H. Cozzens at the Cathedral of Saint Joseph in Sioux Falls. The crosier of DeGrood was made out by his brother from a tree that was on the farm of their family.

The year was 2013. DeGrood assumed the role of pastor for Blessed Sacrament in St. Paul which was the site of the latest instance of sexual assault by clergy in the Archdiocese. A victim of abuse from that case claimed the DeGrood has been “pivotal” in his healing process. He served as the priest for two consecutive years, until August 1st, 2015. As a Blessed Sacrament pastor as well, he also served as in charge of the Archdiocese of Saint Paul and Minneapolis Vicar for Clergy and was as such until the year 2017. From July 2017 until the time he was appointed the bishop for Sioux Falls, he was the pastor of Saint John the Baptist in Savage.
