Punch was born on the 26th of September 1956, in Pwllhelli, Wales. He immigrated to Australia in the year 1971 following his departure from Manchester within the UK and went to secondary school at Manjimup in the state of Collie. The early years of his life of Manchester was turbulent due to the split of his father and mother. He moved to Australia at 14 years old and was able to join the family of his older brother Tony as well as his spouse Ann and then recommenced high school in Manjimup. He graduated in 1973 from Collie High School in 1973 and credits this to the combination of inspirational teachers and the experience of a regional school.

Punch has studied social work and psychology on The University of Western Australia later having completed his MBA from Edith Cowan University. He has worked across the region of Western Australia as a social worker, and later as a senior executive within the government sector. He was appointed CEO of the South West Development Commission in 1998 and remained in the position until the end of 2016 when he resigned after being elected for Bunbury as Bunbury’s Labor Candidate for Bunbury. In his capacity as CEO, Punch was accountable for a variety of aspects of the South West’s growth, including initiatives like the redevelopment of the town’s centre in Manjimup with a particular focus on food-based tourism as well as the renovation of Busselton airport and the restoration of the waterfront in Bunbury.

In 1998, Punch quit Family and Children’s Services to become the Chief Executive Officer in the South West Development Commission. He graduated with his MBA in 2003.

Donald Thomas Punch (born 31 August 1956) is an Australian politician from Australia. He has been an Labor Member of the Western Australian Legislative Assembly since the state election of 2017 in which he was a representative of Bunbury.

He completed his studies in Psychology at UWA and spent the year 1978 working in Manchester. In 1979, he came back to Australia to pursue a degree in social Work in the UWA. UWA. There he met his first wife Beverley and they had two sons, Alan Daniel and Alan Daniel. He was Social worker at Moora before moving to Collie. In 1986, Beverley passed away due to complications of heart surgery. This caused a profound loss to his life and inspired much of his thinking later on about grieving, loss, and human connections.

Punch was appointed to the WA Methamphetamine Task Force in 2017 and is a member of the Community Development and Justice Standing Committee.
