McNay was born in Covington, Kentucky on February 13th, 1959 to his parents Joseph O. McNay (1933-1993) and Ollie O. McNay (1939-2006). McNay had two siblings: Theresa Ann McNay Francis (1969-2006) and his half his brother Joseph John McNay. McNay completed his studies at Covington Catholic High School in 1977. He then was a graduate of Eastern Kentucky University with a Bachelors degree in Politics and Journalism Science at the age of 1981. He was elected to their Hall of Distinguished Alumni in 1998. He then attended Vanderbilt University for his master’s degree and received a second one at The American College of Financial Services. He earned four professional designations within the field of financial services: Chartered Financial Consultant, Chartered Life Underwriter, Certified Structured Settlement Consultant as well as Masters of Science in Financial Services.

McNay received the award for “Best Columnist” from the Kentucky Press Association in 2005. McNay was syndicated columnist for the CNHI news from 2006 until 2013, and a columnist for the community of The Lexington Herald- Leader from 1983 to 1986. He was treasurer for the National Society of Newspaper Columnists.

McNay established McNay Settlement Group, Inc. in 1982. The company specializes in structured settlements and qualified settlement funds and mass torts, in addition to Kentucky Guardianship Administrators. He was a member of the Board of Directors for the National Structured Settlement Trade Association as well as the Society of Settlement Planners. He’s been involved with Kentucky politics, and was the assistant Kentucky State Coordinator in Al Gore’s highly successful primary for president in 1988.
