Donald William Aase (born September 8th 1954) is an American former professional baseball player who was part of Major League Baseball from 1977 until 1990. In the course of the course of his MLB professional career Aase was a part of the Boston Red Sox (1977), California Angels (1978-84) and Baltimore Orioles (1985-88), of the American League. As a member of the National League, he played for the New York Mets (1989) as well as the Los Angeles Dodgers (1990).
Aase was assigned to the bullpen towards the middle of the season in 1980 (he did not play another major league game after this) He was also the Angels principal closer in the year 1981 scoring 11 saves. In July of 1982, he sustained an injury to his elbow that kept for two years. He returned in June 1984 and played 24 appearances with California with 8 saves.
Aase’s sole win in 1987 came on Opening Day, April 6, pitching an inning and a third of scoreless relief after replacing Mike Boddicker. After a few more relief appearances, he missed the rest of the season with shoulder surgery.
With the season approaching, 34-year-old Aase signed as a free agent with the New York Mets on February 20, 1989. Aase made 49 appearances out of the Mets bullpen in 1989, posting a 1-5 record with a 3.94 ERA over 59⁄3 innings.
After his debut season playing in major leagues Aase had been traded to California Angels for infielder Jerry Remy. He was primarily a pitcher during his initial two and a quarter years in the Angels’ lineup, scoring eleven wins between 1978 and 1979. The Angels won the game Three from the 1979 ALCS on the 5th of October 1979 Aase was the very first player of the Angels to secure an ALCS win. In the game Aase was replaced by Frank Tanana in the sixth inning and led 2-1 against the Baltimore Orioles. He allowed runs in the seventh and sixth innings to take the lead, but still took victory after the Angels hit two more runs at the ninth inning to take the win and remain active in this series.

Aase was chosen in his team, the Boston Red Sox in the sixth round of the 1972 amateur draft. The following summer, he battled his fellow players, the Williamsport Red Sox, putting the team through a losing season and an 5.81 ERA. The following year, he pitched playing for the Winter Haven Red Sox and was the leader of to the Florida State League with 15 losses. But he returned in 1974, playing for his team, the Winston-Salem Red Sox, leading the Carolina League in wins, complete games, and shutouts which earned him the league’s Pitcher of the Year. Prior to being promoted with the Boston Red Sox, Aase’s last junior league squad was called the Pawtucket Red Sox.
Aase made it to the majors when he was a part of his place in the Red Sox rotation in July 1977. He took his first big baseball game with the Milwaukee Brewers on July 26 and then pitched a complete no-hitter against the California Angels five days later. He then threw a victory in the game against Toronto’s Blue Jays Toronto Blue Jays on September 5 and concluded his first year in the majors with a 6-2 record as well as an 3.12 ERA in 13 starts (a total of 146 ERAplus).
Following the 1984 season, Aase became a free agent and signed with the Baltimore Orioles. He won 10 games and saved 14 in his first year with the O’s before putting up his best numbers of his big league career in 1986. That season, he saved 23 games in the first half and was named to the American League All-Star team. In the only All-Star Game appearance of his career, he came on in the ninth inning with runners on first and third and one out, and earned the save by inducing Chris Brown to hit into a game-ending double play. Later in the season, he began to show signs of overwork. On August 28, he became the first Orioles pitcher to lose two games in the same day, giving up game-winning hits to Dave Kingman in the first game of the doubleheader against the Oakland Athletics and then to Carney Lansford in the nightcap. Nonetheless, Aase set the record for most saves in a season for an Oriole in with 34, surpassing Tim Stoddard’s 26 saves in 1980. He held the record until Gregg Olson earned 36 saves in 1990. His 34 saves were also at the time the record for a member of a last place team.
