Dmitry was a student in the Locomotiv Sports Society boarding school for athletes, which included the possibility of training for four events every day and in all weather conditions. His most memorable achievement is winning the 4000-meter team pursuit in the 1988 Olympics which took place at the age of 17 years old, making his one of the oldest Olympic cyclist to win the title. In the 1992 Summer Olympics Nelyubin took part in his country’s Unified Team of the defunct Soviet Union, coming sixth. Nelyubin continued professional cycling until 1997 , but with no notable accomplishments.

Dmitry Nelyubin (Russian: Dmitrii Vladislavovich Nelliubin , 8 February 1971 to 1 January 2005) was a track cyclist from Russia and Soviet Union. At the age of 17, Nelyubin along with his teammates Viatcheslave Ekimov, Arturas Kasputis, and Gintautas Umaras winning the 4000-meter team pursuit race in 1988’s Summer Olympics which took place in Seoul. Nelyubin was killed during a street brawl during January 1, 2005. New Year night of January 1st the year 2005. The suspects in the murder, who are residents of Kabardino Balkaria and arrested after four years, in December 2008. The trial started in the month of May 2009 and, in September 2009, the jury found one suspect guilty of murder.
Around 5 a.m. on January 1st January 2005 Dmitry and a number of his acquaintances went outside to set off fireworks on the intersection of Lva Tolstogo Street and Rentgena Street in central Saint Petersburg. A group of young aggressive men surrounded the party and fighting was fought. Nelyubin was wounded in the stomach before falling onto the snow. The attackers fled from the area. Medical emergency personnel were at the scene a half minute after the assault. following four hours surgery in the hospital, Nelyubin died from bleeding at 11:40 the next day.
In May 2009 the case against two of the suspects was deemed completed and passed to the court (only one of the suspects is charged with murder). According to the prosecution, the crime had no direct motives, thus no hate crime clauses were invoked. However, the suspects insist that the attack, indeed, had a motive: they mistook Nelyubin for a neo-nazi. According to the suspects, on the New Year night one of their friends was beaten by skinheads and called for help; they ran out of the hostel and attacked Nelyubin party, believing that these were the alleged skinheads.
