The collection of short stories by Djenar Perempuan 14 Laki-laki (1 Woman 14 Men) is so named because it contains 14 stories co-written by 14 males, was published at the age of 38 on 14 January the 14th of January, 2011. The collection was inspired by the successful collaboration Djenar previously worked on with the writer Agus Noor. This collaboration had produced the story Kunang-Kunang Dalam Bir (Fireflies in a glass of beer) and appeared in Kompas. She is currently writing a new novel called Ranjang (Bed) and the plot was inspired by stories in the petualangan Celana Dalam (The Undergarment Adventures) the short story collection written by another of her co-authors, Nugroho Suksmanto. The fifth short story collection by Djenar, T(w)itit!, was published in celebration of her 39th birthday. The concept for the compilation was Djenar’s tweets, which she crafted in 11 brief stories, woven around a central character named Nayla.
In 2008, Djenar was first introduced as a director when he released the movie version Mereka Bilang, Saya Monyet!. This film is based upon two short stories in the book: Lintah (Leech) as well as Melukis Jendela (Painting the Window). Djenar is also a performer in numerous Indonesian films.

The first novel of Djenar consisted of eleven short stories with”the subtitle Mereka Bilang, Saya Monyet! (They say that I’m a Monkey) that was originally written in 2001, and published in the year following. In 2003, just one year after the publication, Mereka Bilang, Saya Monyet was among the 10 novels nominated for Khatulisitwa Literary Prize. The novel has since been transliterated into English from Michael N. Garcia of Cornell University, with the English translation launching alongside Nayla her debut novel in 2005, at the Ubud Festival of Literature. Her next novel, Jangan Main-Main (dengan Kelaminmu) (Don’t play (with Your Genitals)) is a collection of eleven short stories received a nomination for the Khatulistiwa Literary Award in 2004. Nayla was released in 2005. She followed it with Cerita Pendek Tentang Cerita Cinta Pendek (Short Stories about Short Stories) that was released in 2006.
A number of her short stories have appeared by Indonesian newspapers, such as Kompas and Republika in addition to in magazines like Cosmopolitan Indonesia and Djakarta! Best Short Story awards have been given to two short stories by Djenar specifically Menyusu Ayah (Breastfeeding father) from 2002, and Waktu Nayla (Nayla’s The Time) from 2003. The second work was published together with Asmoro in an collection comprised of Kompas chosen short tales.
