Dina Kochetkova is one of the most popular and richest Artistic Gymnast who was born on July 27, 1977 in Moscow, Russia. Dina Anatolyevna Kochetkova (Russian: Dina Anatol’evna Kochetkova , born 27 July 1977 in Moscow, Russian SFSR) is a Russian gymnast who participated in the 1996 Olympics. In terms of style, she was regarded in the eyes of many as being an example of being the “last of the Soviets,” doing difficult moves with a sleek, smooth technique. A technique she invented the full-twisting back handspring on beam, is still as a part of the Code of Points as “the Kochetkova”.
Kochetkova was a part of the Russian team that competed in the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta and was seen as an appropriate medal contender in many occasions, including the highly coveted All Around event. Before the event in Atlanta, the Russian team was considered to be as the dark horse to win a Team medal, a step ahead of the double World Champion Romanians, fast ascending Chinese and the home country Americans. After a good performance in the compulsory workout and the compulsory exercise, the Russians were in a close lead in the mid- point and were clearly thrilled as they quit the arena. Only the Americans were able to stay within striking distance before the vital Optionals. While the team’s players were all solid however, mistakes made by some of the lesser-ranked Russian gymnasts, in conjunction with anxiety from the high- pressure competition and the roar of the American crowd, caused the team to 2nd at the end of finals. Kochetkova was one of the best team members, performed well in her performances and was those who did not feel the effects of the high-octane atmosphere however, it wasn’t enough to save her team from the silver.
Kochetkova qualified in third place to the all-around competition. Overlooked as a dark horse contender by most of the media though, due to generally being regarded as only the 3rd Russian in hype and Russian coaching favortism to both Roza Galieva and Svetlana Khorkina, she surprised many by being tied for the lead with Chinese star Mo Huilan after three rotations. However, she was to end on vault, by far her weakest apparatus. A decision to perform a difficult 1½ twisting Yurchenko vault in the final rotation proved to be unwise; Kochetkova could not perform the skill as cleanly as her simpler vaults. Her low vault score dropped her to sixth place for the individual competition—the highest of the Russians, but still shy of a medal. Had she managed anything above a 9.681 average (easily attainable for her with her 9.9 valued vault) she would have won the AA silver behind Lilia Podkopayeva of Ukraine. And while she placed into three separate Event Finals, she had no better fortune there, finishing fourth on the balance beam and fifth on uneven parallel bars and floor exercise, all three of which she was considered a potential medalist on. Had she duplicated her beam performance from any of the earlier rounds she would have managed at least the silver medal, as her previous lowest optional beam score was a 9.825.
In 1995’s World Championships, Kochetkova and the Russian team topped with a podium finish in their team event; even though Kochetkova was able to compete in the all-around and two-event finals. However, poor performances and the low vault score prevented her from medal contest. In 1996, at the World Championships she rallied with an impressive balance beam score at 9.887 and won the competition in 1996. At the Europeans she took home an overall bronze in the floor.

Kochetkova was a part of the Soviet national team in the beginning of 1990. She took home four medals in 1991 Junior European Championships, placing second in the floor exercise and third on the vault, all-around as well as balance beam. She continued to be successful in small international competitions but she did not make the headlines as a major player in the Russian team for a few more years.
1994 was her year of breakthrough for Kochetkova. She was the winner of her first title at the Russian National Championships, the Goodwill Games all- around, and three individual medals at the World Gymnastics Championships in Brisbane Bronze in the all-around, which was a distant third behind Shannon Miller and Lavinia Milosovici Gold on the floor and another bronze in the bars that were uneven. A lot of experts and fans believed she was denied winning the 1995 World AA title due to the lack of a reputation. Her bronze medal on uneven bars was also controversial , with many believing that she could have been awarded silver over her teammate Khorkina who was the Russian Federation had already favored. Her popularity grew when she stopped the winning streak that was held by Shannon Miller in AA competition in the AA competition by beating her for the AA title in the 1994 Goodwill Games in Saint Petersbourgh. Kochetkova took home three more gold medals (silver team and AA and the bronze medal FX) at the European Championships and shared in the bronze medal for team during the World Team Championships in Dortmund. However, at the time of the Team World Championships she was quickly being outclassed by her fellow teammate Svetlana Khorkina. Khorkina was placed right after her in the team for the Team Finals in every event because of favoritism and bias from the controversial Russian Head Coach Leonid Arkaev.
Kochetkova underwent knee surgery in 1997 after her retirement. She lives in Moscow with her husband, working as a personal trainer.
