Illarionov is the laureate and winner of numerous international competitions across his native USA, Spain, Poland, Belgium, the Czech Republic and Russia. They include his Grand Prix in the VI International Promotional Competition “Guitar Talents’ Review” (Gdansk, Poland 1999) and the award of “The Greatest Hope” in the “Tenth Gdansk Meeting of Guitarists” The First Prize, as well as the Prize awarded to Public for the VIII International Guitar Competition in Coria (Spain 2004) First Prize in the Russian International Guitar Competition – “Guitar in Russia” in Voronezh (Russia 2002) Second Prize in the Michele Pittaluga World Classical Guitar Championship (Italy 2007 – 2007).

Illarionov became the only guitarist ever to win the Second Prize during the III International Competition of Musical Personalities “Alexander Tansman” (Lodz, Poland – 2000). Cello, violin, piano guitar, and many other instruments compete directly one another in this contest Illarionov’s performance in the competition made him the top-ranked guitarist during the Tansman competition. The competition was held in October of 2002. Illarionov took home The Twentieth International Guitar Foundation of America Solo Guitar Competition (GFA The GFA is located in Miami, Florida, USA). In exchange for the award Illarionov led concerts (in both the USA as well as Canada) and will also record the concert in a video. Apart from the contests for guitar, Illarionov is a laureate of conducting competitions and composition.

Dimitri studied in Russia at the Russian Gnesins’s Academy of Music with the famous performer, Professor Alexander Frauchi, in Germany with Professor Andreas von Wangenheim (Hochschule für Musik Karlsruhe) and also took lessons with composer and guitarist Nikita Koshkin. He is now Professor at the Russian Gnesins’s University of Music in Moscow.
