Another impressive accomplishment Auriol’s resume is that of being an eight- time winner of his favorite race, the Tour de Corse, level record holder alongside Bernard Darniche. As late as 2001 Auriol was still collecting podiums in the race.
In 1993, Auriol changed to Toyota and was able to win his first race for Toyota which was in the Monte Carlo Rally. Auriol did not repeat his victory in 1993, however next year, he took home three rallies: Corsica, Argentina and San Remo rallies, and then went on to the final round, which was held in Great Britain, vying again with Sainz for the title. Despite his performance in the rally, he emerged as World Champion after the Spanish driver was unable to continue the rally during the last day. The year 1995 was the time he claimed his first victory with his Celica GT-Four ST205 in Tour de Corse. But later on in the same season, at the Rally Catalunya, Toyota were discovered to have employed an illegal device inside the turbocharger in order to boost the performance of the engine and were therefore excluded in the final results for the championship of 1995 and were banned for the following year. 1996 Auriol took part in just the two World Championship events. He was a driver in 1996 for Subaru and Subaru in Sweden in Sweden and also with Mitsubishi at San Remo. 1997, he entered Monte Carlo with private Ford and participated in a few rallies using Toyota’s brand new Corolla WRC. Auriol was a driver for Toyota the following two years, winning two times. After Toyota stopped participating in the World Rally Championship after 1999, Auriol moved to SEAT as a driver of the SEAT Cordoba WRC E2. Thanks to Auriol’s expertise, SEAT managed to grab the third place on the podium in the Safari Rally in Kenya in 1999, and later that season they announced their third generation of Cordoba WRC. At the conclusion of the season, the Spanish manufacturer decided to pull out of WRC to concentrate in the creation of a specific series of performance vehicles. Auriol did manage to keep up with Peugeot in 2001 however, only in asphalt- based races in which Auriol did manage to get faster than his teammate Marcus Gronholm. Auriol’s one win in 2001 was from Catalunya. 2002 was a the year of a gap for Auriol however, he signed a his contract with the Skoda team in 2003. Auriol was in charge of the development of his team, the Skoda Fabia WRC.

Auriol took home his first World Championship event, the 1988 Tour de Corse, whilst driving a work Ford Sierra RS Cosworth. This was the sole time during the season that Lancia were defeated in a straight battle which is why the Lancia team subsequently took him on for the following year. The team remained with him for four years and drove three versions of the at the time dominant Lancia Delta Integrale. In 1992, in the final version of the car, He won six events during the same season (a record until it was overtaken by Sebastien Loeb in 2005) however, he had poor results in other events and his an early retirement at the final race of the season, which was the RAC Rally, handed the world championship to Carlos Sainz.
Born in Montpellier and originally an ambulance driver Auriol earned his fame as an French rally driver during the World Rally Championship throughout the 1990s. He was the World Rally Champion in 1994 and was the first driver from his nation to achieve this feat. He was a factory contender to Lancia, Toyota and Peugeot as well, before losing the seat at Skoda towards the end of 2003.
