He has been a winner of his place in the Rome, Eindhoven, Tokyo and Chicago marathons, and holds the personal best of 2 minutes and 05 minutes to cover the entire distance.
He took in the 2013 Tokyo Marathon in 2:05:42, making the record for the race by over 1 minute.
In 2018 he won the Tokyo Marathon for the second time in 2:05:30, improving his personal best time for the distance.
He began his 2013 Xiamen race with speed but he was forced to withdraw after an inexplicably fast sprint into the lead. He was seventh in the 2013 Boston Marathon and then came eighth in the Amsterdam Marathon in October.

In Kenya’s Nandi District, Chumba worked as a gardener before Chumba decided to concentrate on running professionally. He started work alongside Claudio Berardelli in Kapsabet in the year 2008. The first time he ran a marathon was in 2010 and he finished second in each of the Madrid Marathon and the Italian Marathon. The first time he won was in the month of March 2011, when the runner ran a personal best of 2:08:45 hours in order to take home his Rome City Marathon title ahead of the current winner Siraj Gena. He was also faster than Siraj Gena in the Frankfurt Marathon in October, finishing in 2:07:23 but his close-to-world record pace saw him finish seventh.
At the beginning of 2012, he recorded his third consecutive runner-up finish in the Xiamen Marathon, having gradually fell away from his fellow winner Peter Kamais. The victory came at the Eindhoven Marathon as he surged into the second half in the course. While he was struggling in the final two kilometers, He won by 30 seconds and established the record for the course (and personal record) in 2:05:46.
In October 2015 he won the 2015 Chicago Marathon in 2:09:25, in a brilliant tactical race, pulling away at 30 K in a World Marathon Majors race conducted without pace makers.
