Diane Dolores Modahl (nee Edwards born on the 17th June, 1966) is an English former middle distance runner who was a specialist in the 800m. She was awarded the 800 m award at the 1990 Commonwealth Games. Other notable performances at 800 meters include placing 2nd at 1986’s Commonwealth Games, third at the 1989 IAAF Grand Prix Final, fourth at the 1993 World Championships, and winning the European Cup in 1994. She also took home 6 AAAs National 800 m titles and was a representative for Great Britain at four Olympic Games (1988-2000) and made it to the final of the 800 meters in 1988.
In 1993, when she was competing under the name Diane Modahl, she had probably the best year of her professional career. always running under two minutes for the 800m. Her season’s best time was 1:59.00. In 1993, at the World Championships, she ran 1:59.12 in the semi-finals to be able to compete in the final. At the end of the race, which was won by Maria Mutola, she finished fourth in 1:59.42. Modahl was placed among the top ten athletes in the Track & Field News 800m world merit rankings for the second time in 1993. She was again at the number seven spot. Modahl and her husband Vicente wrote a book about their experiences, The Diane Modahl Story – Going the Distance, published in 1995. A second updated edition was released in 1996 after Modahl won her case.
The British Athletics Federation lifted Modahl’s ban on 25 July 1995 when they lost the appeal hearing in London. On 25 March 1996 the IAAF congress in South Africa also accepted the evidence and cleared Modahl of the charges. The IAAF general secretary István Gyulai said, “We can no longer trust that the laboratories get it right; we have to test the testers more often.”
In the month of January, 1990, Edwards won the gold medal in the 800m event at the Commonwealth Games, winning in 2:00.25. On July 14, 1990, Edwards broke her English record for the 800m race with 1:58.65 in Oslo the time was to remain the fastest ever of her life. Before that, the record stood at 1:58.98 from Shireen Bailey, in 1987. This was the UK record was held by Scottish birthed Welsh swimmer Kirsty Wade (1:57.42). The month of August saw Edwards was in the final of the 1990 European Championships, finishing eighth. born Diane Edwards in Manchester, to Jamaican parents, she was awarded her 1984 English Schools 800 metres title in 2:05.7. She became one of Britain’s best 800m runners when she was just 20 in 1986 and won the AAA Championships title ahead of Lorraine Baker. She was able to take home an Olympic gold medal in the Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh in 2:01.12 and was second behind Kirsty Wade. In the following month, in the 1985 European Championships, she reached the semi-finals in the 800m race, but fell in 2:00.84.
As of 1987, Edwards was awarded in 1987 the UK Championship 800m title. She also kept the AAAs 800m title in order to gain selection to in 1987’s World Championships, where she reached the semifinals , and ran her personal record of 1:59.34. The following year, Edwards won an invitation to at the Seoul Olympic Games, where she completed 1:59.66 at the quarterfinals and qualified to compete in the final. In 1994, after a competition in Lisbon, her urine sample mimicked a positive reading for the performance-enhancing drug testosterone. Falsely accused of a doping offence, she professed her innocence and was later fully exonerated following an appeal. She returned to competition in 1996, and won a bronze medal at the 1998 Commonwealth Games. Her career best 800 m time of 1:58.65 in 1990, ranks her seventh on the UK all-time list.
