Desmond John Smyth (born 12 February 1953) is an Irish professional golfer. He was a winner 8 times the European Tour between 1979 and 2001. In addition, he enjoyed a great senior career that saw him win twice in the Champions Tour and five times on the European Senior Tour between 2005 between 2005 and 2012. He also played in 2 Ryder Cup matches, 1979 and 1981.

Smyth was a member of Europe at Europe’s participation in the Ryder Cup in 1979 and 1981, and lost each occasion to United States. Smyth also was a player for Ireland at the World Cup and the Alfred Dunhill Cup numerous times, and was a part of the Irish team (alongside Eamonn Darcy and Ronan Rafferty) who took the former in 1988. In 2006, at the Ryder Cup, he was the vice- captain of Ian Woosnam’s team.

Smyth became a professional golfer in 1974, and was a part of the European Tour for over a quarter of century. His best result at the top of the European Tour Order of Merit was seventh in 1988. He took home eight championships on the tour over four different eras and broke Neil Coles’ record as the oldest person to win the title of a European Tour event when he won in 2001 the Madeira Island Open at the age of 48 and 33 days. The record was broken in the hands of Miguel Angel Jimenez (48 years and 11 months, 13 days) at the 2012 UBS Hong Kong Open.
