Kilmer was named the 33rd highest multi-party member of the U.S. House of Representatives in the 114th United States Congress (and Kilmer was the third- most bipartisan members of U.S. House of Representatives from Washington) in the Bipartisan Index developed in the hands of The Lugar Center and the McCourt School of Public Policy which ranks members of the United States Congress according to their level of the bipartisanship (by analysing the amount at which each member’s bill is co-sponsored by the opposing party as well as the co-sponsorship each member has for bills by members of the opposing party).

It was 2006 when Republican State senator Bob Oke was deciding to retire. Kilmer was able to decide to run for the 26th Senate district. He was defeated by Republican Jim Hines 60%-40%. He was able to win his second term in office by defeating Marty McClendon 59%-41%.

On March 5, 2012, Kilmer announced he was running to succeed Norm Dicks for the seat representing Washington’s 6th congressional district. On November 6, 2012, Kilmer won the general election to become the district’s next representative. He received 186,661 votes, to opponent Bill Driscoll’s 129,725.

On October 29, 2013, Kilmer introduced the American Savings Promotion Act (H.R. 3374; 113th Congress), a bill that would authorize some financial institutions to conduct a contest, known as a “savings promotion raffle,” in which the sole consideration required for a chance of winning designated prizes is obtained by the deposit of a specified amount of money in a savings account or program, where each ticket or entry has an equal chance of being drawn.

In 2004 Kilmer ran against his incumbent Republican State Rep. Lois McMahan of Washington’s 26th house district, seat 2. Kilmer won her race 50%-48%, which was a difference of 1,009 votes.

Derek Christian Kilmer (born January 1st 1974) is an American politician who has served as elected the U.S. Representative for Washington’s 6th congressional district from 2013. As a participant in the Democratic Party, Kilmer previously was a member of the Washington House of Representatives from 2005 until 2007 and was an elected part of the Washington State Senate from 2007 until 2013 which was the 26th district.

Kilmer was raised and born at Port Angeles, Washington. Both his parents were teachers at public schools. Kilmer obtained his B.A. in public affairs and an award from the Department of American Studies from Princeton University’s Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs in the year 1996. He wrote his 184-page thesis entitled “Recovering From the Addiction: The Social and Economic Impacts of the Pacific Northwest Timber Crisis; An Analysis of the Implementation of the Clinton Forest Plan on Washington’s Olympic Peninsula” under the direction under the direction of Steven R. Brechin. He was awarded the Marshall Scholarship to obtain his Ph.D. in Comparative Social Policy from the Department of Social Policy and Intervention at Green Templeton College, Oxford.

In 2007, he was one of just three Democratic state senators to vote against the bill that would allow labor unions to spend non-members’ bargaining fees on political causes without first getting their permission.
