He took a course in law and political economy on the campus of Erasmus University Rotterdam. He graduated in 1977 and 1976, and after that he went into New York City, where he earned his master’s degree in international relations from New York University’s New School for Social Research in 1979.

De Jong has been active in the Socialist Party (SP) since 2007 when he was the coordinator of the working group on globalization and socialization for a number of years . From 2007 De Jong has been an active member of the departmental board for The Rotterdam SP.

Due to his work working at The Ministry of Justice, he was assigned in The European Commission on behalf of the Netherlands. In the Commission, he created the Commission report that for a long period was the basis of ideas in the area of immigration and asylum policies that were adopted by the European Union. After serving for three years with the European Commission, De Jong was back in Brussels for a second time, this time to be a justice committee member for the Dutch Permanent Representation of the Netherlands to the European Union. In 1998, he returned to the Netherlands and was in charge of several important conference within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Justice and Foreign Affairs. De Jong also obtained his PhD in 2000 at Maastricht University in the field of international human rights. during his last term, between the years 2002-2009, he was the special good governance and human rights advisor for the Netherlands.

Cornelis Dingenis “Dennis” de Jong (born 22 May 1955) is a Dutch politician from the Socialist Party. He was elected into the European Parliament in 2009 and 2014 as the top party’s candidate. In 2014, was the leader in the Socialist Party in the European Parliament. In his capacity as an MEP he’s part of the European Union Green Left, a Left-Nordic Green left. In 2019 he did not run for reelection.

Following the completion of his education, De Jong started his career in 1979 in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in which he was an ambassador for the NATO management. From 1983 until 1987, De Jong worked at the Ministry of Social Affairs and Employment within the International Relations and European Integration Department. From 1987 to 1993 De Jong subsequently worked at the Ministry of Justice and Security in charge as the department’s head for the formulation of the refugee and immigration policy.

He was elected and reelected to the European Parliament in 2009 and 2014 as his party’s top candidate, and he was the Leader of the Socialist Party in the European Parliament. As an MEP, he is part of the European United Left–Nordic Green Left. in 2019, he did not seek reelection.
