Denise Barlow was born in Yorkshire, UK on 31 January 1950. When she was 16years old, she began a pre-nursing training course at a vocational college. When she turned 18 she was able to train and was employed over four years, as a registered state nurse (SRN) in the United Kingdom. At this point she decided to enrol at a college to learn more about the human body’s physiology and diseases, but was required to go to a different technical college in order to study A-levels before she could begin.

Barlow was appointed a part-time member of the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO) in 1995. She has been a member of the EMBO Science and Society Committee since 1998. She was named chairwoman of the committee from 2002. She was a proponent of more opportunities for women scientists to hold top positions in research institutions and universities.

In 2003, Barlow joined the Research Center for Molecular Medicine of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (CeMM) as a founding member, where she continued her epigenetic research as principal investigator until her retirement in

2015. In 2014, she received the Erwin Schrödinger Prize, worth 15.000 Euros, for her lifetime achievements. This prize, which was endowed in 1958, is the most prestigious award of the Austrian Academy of Sciences. The last published work of Barlow’s former group described the first complete allelome, adding to previous discoveries of Barlow and her lab such as the first imprinted gene and the first imprinted non-coding RNA, which controls imprinted silencing

in 1988 Barlow began working at the newly established Research Institute of Molecular Pathology (IMP) in Vienna and worked as a group manager until 1996. In the year 1991 Barlow discovered the first imprinted gene found in mouse, IGF2R.

Barlow (31 January 1950 21 Oct. 2017) was an British geneticist who was involved on the subject of epigenomics. Barlow was elected as a to the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO) as well as Honorary Professor of Genetics within the University of Vienna and recipient of the Erwin Schrodinger Prize from the Austrian Academy of Sciences. She identified the first imprinted mammalian gene, IGF2R which encodes the insulin-like growth factor.

When she was 25 years old, Barlow began to attend Barlow’s University of Reading for a three-year BSc Honors program in Zoology along with Physiology as well as Biochemistry. Following her completion, Barlow took up a PhD post in Warwick University, supervised by Derek Burke, to study the interferon response to viral infection within mouse embryos. Barlow earned an PhD in the field of mouse development biological biology, in the year 1981.

After her stay at the IMP, Barlow moved to a group leader position at the Netherlands Cancer Institute in Amsterdam in 1996. Thereafter, she continued her work at the Institute of Molecular Biology of the Austrian Academy of Sciences in Salzburg.
