It was 1992 when Prigent performed a cappella in the Transmusicales in front of an audience who were not used to this type of music. The group he was in later disbanded. Daouarn in which he performed in the style of the form of festou-noz. He was a part of festivals such as the Montreux Jazz Festival, the Francofolies and the Midem and The Printemps de Bourges, the Coup de Coeur francophone in Quebec and The Mitte Europa festival, the Celtic Connection festival in Scotland Expo 1998 in Lisbonne as well as Lisbonne, and the Eisteddfod Festival in Wales.

In 1993, Prigent released his first album Ar gouriz koar (translated The Wax Belt) on Auvidis/Silex. Although the album was, at first, intended for promoting Prigent’s songs to festival organizers rather than for being sold to the general audience, its sales approached 50,000 copies. Most of the songs are traditional Breton folk songs sung a cappella. However, former Storlok members Denez Abernot and Bernez Tangi wrote “Plac’h Landelo” and “Gwerz ar vezhinerien”, respectively, while Prigent himself wrote “Gwerz an aksidan”. Like all of his subsequent recordings, Ar gouriz koar is sung in the kan ha diskan and gwerz styles.

In 1995, Prigent appeared in Dao Dezi. The goal of this project of Éric Mouquet, a member of Deep Forest, and Guilain Joncheray is to treat Breton music in the same way that Deep Forest treated African music, with traditional lyrics and electronic accompaniments. Michel Sanchez, the other member of Deep Forest, also worked on the album, recorded and mixed by Erwin Autrique. Breton singers Arnaud Maisonneuve and Manu Lann Huel also appear on the album, as well as Tri Yann. It is Prigent’s first experience combining Breton lyrics and electronic music.

In 1988, motivated by his love for his love of the Breton dialect, he began his career as in the position of a Breton instructor in Carhaix and was frequently invited to traditional music festivals like The Tombees de la nuit (Nightfalls) as well as the Festival Interceltique of Lorient. In the year 1991 Rennes, the capital city Rennes offered him the chance to sing as a part of”the “Voice of Asia” festival scheduled to be held in the newly twinned town in Alma Ata, Kazakhstan. Incredulous at the invitation, Prigent composed a satirical tune, “Son Alma Ata” (later added to Sarac’h) about the absurdity of an Breton musician to be asked for a performance in Kazakhstan. The first concert he performed abroad offered the opportunity to meet Kazakh culture. Kazakh people, later included in the Soviet Union, and compare their situation with that for the Breton people who had been who were incorporated into France. In the year 1991, Prigent resigned from his teaching job to pursue his career as an artist. When he was scouring the lyrics to traditional songs, he came across Eugenie Ebrel who was born Goadec who was one among the 3 Goadec Sisters that revived Breton A cappella singing throughout the 1960s. She gave him the lyrics to “Ti Eliz Iza”, and her daughter, Annie Ebrel, decided to perform with him.

Denez Prigent (Breton pronunciation:”‘de:nes ‘pri:Zen(t)[‘de:nes ‘pri:Zen(t)] ; born on 17 February, 1966 at Santec, Finistere) is a Breton folk singer- songwriter who is a part of the gwerz as well as the kan ha diskan style in Breton music. At 16 years old, he was a singer who sang traditional songs in a cappella and then he began performing his own music, with techno music accompanying them. He has been performing in France as well as around the world recording seven studio albums and 2 live recordings.

At the age of 14, Prigent was taught kan ha diskan by Alain Leclere, himself a former pupil from Manuel Kerjean, whose other students included Erik Marchand. A year later, in 1982, he joined Alain Leclere in festou-noz. As part of his first year in the Kan ar Bobl, he took home the first prize of Kan ha diskan in 1987. At his wife’s request, Prigent attended the first rave party held in Rennes, in 1993, in spite of his negative prejudice. There, he discovered a music that, like Breton music, is primarily meant to support dancing. Noticing that electronic music and Breton music are based on similar rhythms and notes closed to one another, he contemplated using it to accompany his songs.
