Delia Lawrie is one of the most popular and richest Politician who was born on July 30, 1966 in Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia. Delia Phoebe Lawrie (born 30 July 1966) is an Australian politician in Australia. She was an elected Member of the Northern Territory Legislative Assembly from 2001 until 2016, representing Karama as the district of Karama. It was her Labor members from 2001 until 2015 and was the leader of the party and leader of the Opposition between 2012 and 2015. On October 10, 2015 following her defeat in the Labor selection to contest her seat in this year’s election, she quit the party and became an independent.
In 2012 in 2012, the Henderson Labor government granted Unions NT the opportunity to lease for ten years rent-free of the historical Stella Maris site in Darwin. An inquiry into the reasons of the lease was launched by the CLP government following the election for the territory in 2012, and Commissioner John Lawler found that the process was not transparent and that the actions by Lawrie (then treasurer) and Gerry McCarthy (then lands minister) in connection with the lease were “not accountable or responsible”. Lawrie asserted that she was not treated with respect and fairness in the process, and brought the matter before the NT Supreme Court, which rejected her case on 1 April 2015. Attorney general John Elferink then referred Lawrie to the Northern Territory Police for investigation of “possible breaches of the criminal law”. Following the debacle to resolve this Supreme Court case, the Labor caucus announced that it doubted Lawrie’s leadership and passed the motion to spill. Michael Gunner announced that he was going to challenge Lawrie to the position of leader. But on April 19, Lawrie announced she was leaving the leadership position to concentrate on the legal probe and left Gunner to assume the position without opposition.
In March 2020, she became the senior adviser to Terry Mills, leader of the Territory Alliance party.
In October of 2015, The NT section of the Labor Party disendorsed Lawrie due to fears that her legal problems could hurt Labor’s chances of winning elections. Labor instead chose to select Ngaree Ah Kit to be its candidate for Karama for the next election. Within a couple of days of being rejected, Lawrie resigned from the Labor Party, and stated she would be considering recontesting for her position as an independent in an election in the near future. Lawrie was defeated narrowly in the election by Ah Kit at the election regarding preferences.
