Delara Darabi Biography

Delara Darabi is one of the most popular and richest Painter who was born on September 29, 1986 in Rasht, Gilan Province, Iran. Delara Darabi (Persian: dlr DRB ) (29 September 1986 , 1 May 09) was an Iranian Gilaki woman who was sentenced to execution after being found guilty of killing her cousin’s daughter by her father in 2003. While Delara initially claimed she was responsible for the murder but later retracted her claim and claimed that her former lover, Amir Hossein, had convinced her to deny the incident in order to protect him. According to Delara and other sources who are familiar with the investigation, Amir Hossein was the one who committed the murder as a way to steal money from one of the wealthy members from the Darabi family.

The judiciary’s head approved a stay of two months of execution, however the final approval to execute her was handed to Rasht prison officials. Delara Darabi’s death was announced at 5:00 am local time on the 1st of May 2009 in Rasht Central Prison, with no prior communication to her lawyer and family members. A few minutes prior to being hanged, she was permitted to make a final telephone call to parents and she pleaded with them to spare her before hearing jail warden’s voice telling her parents that she would get executed on account of her crime immediately.

Darabi painted. She also wrote poems throughout her life. Darabi used her paintings as well as poems in order to convey her emotions. In 2008, there were exhibitions of her work in Tehran and a similar show occurred in Stockholm in April 2007.

Darabi was attempting suicide when she cut her wrists the 20th of January, 2007. But her cellmate noticed and asked for assistance. The hospital was called and she was taken in and was revived.

Darabi was born in the northern city of Rasht, in the province of Gilan. Darabi was hanged in the morning of 1 May 2009. The news of her hanging was announced to the world by Iranian-American lawyer, Lily Mazahery, who posted the information on Twitter.
