Elmegreen was born in South Bend, Indiana in 1952. She began her interest in astronomy at an early age. She received her bachelor’s diploma in astrophysics at Princeton University in 1975, which was the first female to earn an astrophysics degree. She also earned the Masters in astronomy and Ph.D in astronomy from Harvard University in astronomy. In 1976 she was married Bruce Elmegreen, an astronomer.

In 2013 she along with her husband wrote an article “The Onset of Spiral Structure in the Universe”, published in the Astrophysical Journal.

She was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2019.

Elmegreen is particularly interested Star formation and star formation galaxies. Since 1997, Elmegreen has released an undergraduate astronomy textbook entitled, Galaxies and Galactic Structure Through Prentice Hall. Elmegreen has also published more than 200 academic studies. She served as the president of the American Astronomical Society from 2010-2012 She was also appointed an official member for the 2010 Astronomy and Astrophysics Decadal Survey through the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine.

Debra Meloy Elmegreen (born on November 23rd 1952, in South Bend, Indiana) is an American astronomer. Her first accomplishment was to complete her studies at Princeton University with a degree in astrophysics. She also was the first postdoctoral female scientist at Carnegie Observatories.

Elmegreen conducted post-doctoral studies with the Hale Observatory (now Mount Wilson Observatory) from 1979 to the present in which she was the first female postdoctoral researcher at one of the Carnegie Observatories. In 1985 she started instructing astronomy classes on the campus of Vassar College. By 1990, she was an associate professor, and later department chair in 1993.

Since 1985, she has been a professor of astronomy at Vassar College. She wrote an astronomy textbook published by Prentice Hall in 1997. She served as president of the American Astronomical Society from 2010-2012, and on August 30, 2018 was named President-elect of the International Astronomical Union (IAU) at the group’s 30th triennial General Assembly in Vienna, Austria.
