Debbie Stafford (born April 5 1953) is an Colorado legislator in Colorado. The first time she was elected in the Colorado House of Representatives as an Republican during 2000. Stafford got elected to four consecutive terms as a representative of House District 40 that covers Elbert County and rural Arapahoe County east of Aurora, Colorado. She was noted for her work on animal welfare and issues affecting children, Stafford left the Republican caucus and was elected to with the Democratic Party in October 2007.

In the 2007 session of the legislature, Stafford served as a member of the House Health and Human Services Committee and also the House Judiciary Committee. While she briefly considered an opportunity to run to run for Colorado State Senate, Stafford has announced that she will leave the legislature at the end of the session in 2008. Her stated goals in her final year of the legislature include rules that ban the disposal of dead animals in landfills. Stafford was also the first to introduce legislation to govern funeral services which includes new requirements that funeral directors must be licensed. she also authored a similar bill in 2006, which was rejected by Governor. Bill Owens.

Although Stafford holds traditionally conservative views on issues such as abortion, stem cell research, and school vouchers, Stafford has also crossed the aisle to support measures to end Colorado’s death penalty and prohibit discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation. In 2007, she also faced opposition from many in the Republican Party for supporting a contentious bill to expand the ability of homeowners to sue over construction defects.

In the 2008 legislative session, Stafford planned to sponsor legislation to regulate hunting in Colorado, requiring that hunters must allow hunted animals opportunity for a “fair chase.” The measure was opposed by some wildlife ranchers. Facing opposition from hunters and ranchers, Stafford asked for the bill to be killed in committee. Stafford also introduced legislation to restrict the ability of toll road companies to claim land within proposed road corridors, legislation killed in a house committee for its possible effects on railroads.

In 2001, Stafford was able to become an auctioneer. She used her auctioneering talents at fundraisers for non-profit organizations while she was legislator. Stafford has three children: Matthew, Melissa, and Rebekah She was divorced during the first campaign for legislative office in 2000. She is now married to the former Defense Intelligence Agency employee Bob Edison.

The family was born in Rapid City, South Dakota of Lakota Sioux descent, Stafford graduated from the Pikes Peak Institute of Medical Technology in

1972. She worked as a medical assistant and optometrist assistant in Colorado Springs before attending Nazarene Bible College from 1973 until 1974. A licensed minister, she was the assistant pastor of Calvary Temple as well as Heritage Christian Center from 1986 until 1989, before becoming a counselor for domestic violence in the early 1990s. The year 1997 saw the Heritage Christian Center founded Project Heritage, a community charity that helps the poor; Stafford is currently the Chair of the board of directors. She also graduated with an associate degree in arts in 1992 from Aspen College in 1992.

Stafford was the first candidate for Colorado State House as a Republican in 2000. Just prior to the election of November 2000 Stafford was appointed to replace Rep. Gary McPherson, who was retiring, Rep. Gary McPherson died in an accident involving his plane and then Gov. Bill Owens appointed Stafford to complete McPherson’s legislative term. She was officially sworn in as an official of the state legislature on October 26, 2000. She was elected for an entire period in the legislative chambers one week afterward. Stafford was elected again during 2002, 2004 and 2006, each time with a large margin in the heavily Republican district.

In October 2007, Stafford announced that she would switch party affiliation from Republican to Democrat, citing poor treatment from Republican leaders, and noting, “I am not leaving the Republican Party as much as the Republican Party left me.” She was welcomed by the Democratic legislative majority as the 40th member of the House Democratic Caucus. In switching parties, she became the first Colorado legislator to do so since 1987. When she switched political parties, ( in the middle of her term ), she described herself as being treated like ” a battered women ” in the Republican party. This drew sharp criticism from both Democrats and Republicans with some of her constituents questioning her mental health.
