Parents, Clarence and Estelle Staley moved into North Philadelphia from South Carolina in the 1950s when they were teenagers. They got married young, and then moved to an apartment with three bedrooms and a single bathroom house where they raised five children: three boys, two girls, and the youngest the daughter Dawn. Staley is now the director of her own foundation, the Dawn Staley Foundation, which helps middle-schoolers have an impactful role in their lives by funding an after-school club at the Hank Gathers Recreation Center. The Center concentrates on academics as well as athletics , and is a sponsor of basketball leagues as well as other fund-raising activities. She is currently working on the first of a series of four books loosely in the vein of her childhood.
Staley went to her studies at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Virginia, from which she graduated with a diploma with a degree in Rhetoric as well as Communication Studies. Through her four seasons of college, she coached the team in four NCAA tournaments including three Final Fours as well as an NCAA National Championship game. The team was awarded by the ACC Female athlete of the Year, and the player of the nation that year both in the years the years 1991 and 1992. Staley completed her college career with 2,135 goals and set her own NCAA record for steals in a career with 454 (which was later broken by the current record holder, Natalie White). Staley finished her time in Virginia in the position of the university’s top scorer and the ACC’s all- time record-holder in assists with 729. However, those records have since been shattered by former UVA players Monica Wright and Sharnee Zoll and Sharnee Zoll, respectively. Her number is now retired at UVA.
Staley played for Team USA throughout her career. In 1994 she competed in the World Championships and was named the USA basketball Female Athlete of the Year. She led the 1996 team to an undefeated record of 60–0 and the gold medal at the 1996 Atlanta Summer Olympics. She was also a member of the 2000 Olympic team that defended the gold medal.
In 1994–1995, after graduation, Staley played professional basketball in France in Tarbes, Italy, Brazil, and Spain before joining the ABL and then the WNBA.
Staley was selected to the team that represented his country of the United States at the World University Games that took place in July of 1991 at Sheffield, England. The American team had been crowned the gold medal in 1983, they came out with a silver medal in 1985, and fourth place by 1987 and didn’t field an entire team in 1989. The team was led by Tara VanDerveer of Stanford. After winning the opening game easily, Team USA faced China in the finals. The Americans shot just 36 percent from the field however, they were able to limit the Chinese to only 35%. They then were able to advance into the gold medal match with an overall scoring of 79-76. They then faced Spain who had won seven previous tournaments. But, Team USA defeated them easily, 88-62. They were able to win their gold trophy. Staley was averaging 4.9 scores per match during the competition.

Dawn Michelle Staley (born May 4 1970) is a former American Basketball Hall of Fame player and coach. Staley is triple Olympic gold medalist and was selected to fly the United States flag at the opening ceremony of the 2004 Summer Olympics. After playing as a point guard at the University of Virginia under Debbie Ryan in 1996, and winning gold during the Summer Olympics She then went into professional basketball in both the American Basketball League and the WNBA. The year 2011 was the one in which Staley has been voted by the fans among the top fifteen players of WNBA history. Staley was admitted to the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame in 2012. She was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2013.
Staley was chosen for her place on the USA Basketball Women’s Junior National Team (now known as”the team for U19 players”). The team played at the 2nd Junior World Championship, held in Bilbao, Spain, in July 1989. Team USA fell in their opening game against South Korea in overtime, after which they lost a game of two points against Australia. After beating Bulgaria, Team USA lost another game that was close but this time it was in the face of Czechoslovakia with a score of three. The team followed this defeat with a win over Zaire however, they lost their final game against Spain also with three point difference. Staley scored 10.8 scores per match, and had 14 steals in during the tournament which was second for the team. The Americans ended the tournament seventh.
Staley competed with USA Basketball as a member of the 1992 Jones Cup Team that won the Gold in Taipei.
