Dawn Petula Butler (born 3 November 1969) is a British Labour Party politician serving as a Member of the Parliament (MP) for Brent Central since the year 2015. Butler was the an Assistant Secretary to State in the Department of Women and Equalities in Jeremy Corbyn’s Shadow Cabinet from 2017 to 2020, and was also the Member of Parliament from Brent South from 2005 to 2010.
The committee was named the Select Committee on the Modernisation of the House of Commons immediately following her election and also served on the standing committees. In November 2007, she became a member of the Children & Families Select Committee. Prior to that (in the month of November in 2005) she was appointed as the Private Secretary of the Parliamentary Secretary to Health Minister Jane Kennedy, but decided to step down from this post at the beginning of 2006.
In March 2009, Butler was criticised for claiming almost the full £23,000 annual second home allowance, despite her second home in Stratford being the same distance from Parliament as her Brent South home.
In January 2009, Butler published on her website a letter which she described as an “absolutely genuine” endorsement from US President Barack Obama. Butler later admitted that the endorsement had been written by her staff with the consent of Obama’s aides, then signed and reviewed by Obama, proving that the endorsement was “genuine”.
The interest in youth services remained to be one of her primary priorities during her time in Parliament. On October 24, 2006 she was named chairman of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Youth Affairs and is the honorary vice- president of the British Youth Council. Following the election of Gordon Brown became prime minister in June 2007 Butler was appointed one of Labour’s 6 vice-chairs, having special responsibility for issues affecting youth.

Butler first applied as an official Labour Candidate for the Labour party in Hackney South and Shoreditch, which is where she was on an all-women’s shortlist, but was unable to get the job. Butler made a formal application to be considered to be the candidate for West Ham in 2005 but was not chosen. Following the resignation of Paul Boateng to become British High Commissioner to South Africa, she was chosen to be the Labour candidate for Brent South and retained the seat of her party in the general election in 2005 with an 11326 majority. She was the 3rd black woman to be elected a British MP, following Diane Abbott and Oona King.
