David Whitton was elected the Scottish Parliament for Strathkelvin and Bearsden in 2007, beating his incumbent Independent MSP Jean Turner, and then losing the seat in the election of 2011 in favour of Fiona McLeod of the Scottish National Party.

After the initial Scottish Parliament elections, Whitton was appointed Special Adviser for the Prime Minister of Scotland, Donald Dewar and the official spokesperson on behalf of Dewar as the Minister’s First Spokesman as well as the Scottish Executive. Whitton gave a speech at the funeral of Dewar held at Glasgow Cathedral on 18 October 2000.

In the SNP landslide victory in the 2011 Scottish Parliament election, he lost his seat to Fiona McLeod, on a swing of 7.7%.

In the year 2000, Whitton established his own public affairs consulting firm with clients that included Scottish Enterprise, The Scottish Council for Development and Industry, The Al-Maktoum Institute for Arabic and Islamic Studies. In the same time Whitton was also part of the committee to raise funds to support The Donald Dewar chair of Social Justice.

Whitton attended his school, the Morgan Academy in Dundee. He began his journalism career working for D. C. Thomson at the age of the year 1970. He then joined The Fife Free Press and then the Evening Express in Aberdeen, with a focus on local government issues. He was employed by The Scotsman in Glasgow for three years, before moving into The Daily Record where he became Industrial Editor in 1983. Between 1986 and 1996 Whitton was employed at Scottish Television in a variety of roles , including the producer of current affairs and news programming, Lobby Correspondent at Westminster as well as a presenter for programs on politics and on screen news reporter. He was the Head of Public Affairs from 1994 to 1996. Whitton’s tenure with Scottish Television was followed by an unspecified time as Director at the PR firm, Media House. David Whitton is married and has two children and two grandchildren. He is an associate part of the National Union of Journalists.

In 1999, Whitton was appointed Special Adviser to Secretary of the day, Scottish Secretary Donald Dewar. Whitton was a participant in the The Scottish Labour Party’s Scottish Parliament election campaign responsible for organizing coverage of the election as well as media events in support of Dewar, the Party leader.

Whitton was elected to the Scottish Parliament in May 2007 for the constituency of Strathkelvin and Bearsden becoming Parliamentary Aide to Wendy Alexander MSP until her resignation as party leader on 28 June 2008. In addition to a position as Deputy Labour Party Spokesperson on Finance, he was a substitute member of the Economy, Energy and Tourism Committee, Member of the Finance Committee, a member of the Labour Trade Union Group, and a Board member of the Scottish Parliamentary Business Exchange. In 2010/11 Whitton claimed more than £34,000 in expenses which was the sixth highest amount at the Scottish Parliament.
