David John Theobald (born 15 December 1978) is a English semi- professional footballer who has retired that played for the Football League for Brentford, Swansea City and Cambridge United. He spent the majority of his playing career in non-league football. He played primarily with Cambridge City, for whom more than 270 games were played over three seasons. He is currently the first team manager at Cambridge City.
Between 2003 until 2018, Theobald enjoyed an extensive career in non-league football. He played primarily for Cambridge City, for whom he played in 274 games with 39 goals in three seasons. Theobald was also a player for Canvey Island, Kettering Town, St Albans City, Royston Town, Soham Town Rangers and Bishop’s Stortford.
On 8 October 2015, Theobald and fellow senior player Robbie Nightingale took over as joint-managers of Isthmian League First Division North club Soham Town Rangers. He remained in the role until 4 December 2016, when he followed Nightingale out of the club.
On 5 December 2016, Theobald returned to Southern League Premier Division club Cambridge City as first team coach.
On July 26, 2002 Theobald signed a one-year deal for a one-year period with Third Division club Swansea City in a transfer for free. Theobald played just 12 games before he left the Vetch field in the month of February.

As a defender, theobald started his career in the youth program in the youth system at Cambridge United, before joining the youth squad of Ipswich Town. Theobald progressed to an academic scholarship however he was not able to secure an invitation to join the first team until his departure at the end in the season 1998-1999.
On July 8, 1999 Theobald signed a three-year contract with newly promoted Second Division club Brentford on the basis of a free transfer. He was employed as a backup for injuries, and also had a stint within the squad as an extra right back to replace Danny Boxall who was disabled Danny Boxall during the 1999-00 season as well as in central defense in place of Scott Marshall during 2000-01. Theobald was included as a starter during The 2001 Football League Trophy Final and was awarded a runners-up award. Theobald was let go following Brentford’s defeat at the 2002 Second Division play-off Final and only played 37 games in 3 seasons in Griffin Park.
On 7 February 2003, Theobald joined hometown Third Division club Cambridge United on a contract running until the end of the 2002–03 season. He made just one appearance before his contract expired.
