Newton was part of a trio from Bradford in 1978. He also worked at a theatre in Scarborough. Newton returned to Scotland in the beginning of the 1980s. In the early 1980s, he “established a considerable reputation as an accompanist to visiting American musicians before he launched his own solo career”. The year 1986 was the year he released his debut recording, along with Buddy DeFranco. He relocated to London next year and “worked with Alan Barnes, then toured with Martin Taylor’s Quartet (including [a] trip to India) from 1989 to 1991.” He was Carol Kidd’s vocalist’s musical director during the 1990s. He also performed with other singers.
