The year of his breakthrough for Gleeson was 2002, when he won his first professional victory at the Asian Tour at the Volvo China Open in which Gleeson led from beginning to end. After his first victory, he noticed an ebb in his performance.

The second Asian Tour win for Gleeson came in 2008 at the Macau Open. He finished 2008 as his most successful season on the Asian Tour, earning almost $500,000 and a 5th-place finish on the Order of Merit. Gleeson credits his return to form to fatherhood, saying he has less time now to tinker with his swing.

After not having much an early success with Asia, Gleeson decided to try the game of golf from Australia. He was a medalist at the qualification school in 2001, and also scored his highest result for the calendar during the Australian PGA Championship, where Gleeson finished 9th.

Gleeson was born in Queensland and played in the amateur golf tournament alongside famous golfers Adam Scott, Geoff Ogilvy and Brett Rumford. He won his biggest amateur victory in his 1997 Australian Amateur. He was also member of the team that won for the 1996 Eisenhower Trophy. He made the switch to professional football in 1998.
