In 1989, after several high school groups, Garza enrolled in the University of Texas at Austin in Texas, where he and the group Twang Twang Shock-A Boom (named as a reference to the bass, guitar as well as the drums) attracted the attention of the music industry due to Garza’s mix of the pop-savvy songwriting style and Robert Plant vocals. After the band disbanded to pursue his own career Garza formed a backup band and performed regularly across the Texas region, performing under the name David Garza and the Lovebeads and later DAH-VEED.

He was in 2002 when he recorded together with Rhett Miller in the recording of The Instigator, and in 2004 he was on Hanson’s Underneath album. The year 2005 saw him toured along with Fiona Apple on her Extraordinary Machine tour, playing as both the opening act and also as guitarist for Fiona Apple’s backing group. He also performed on the album of Blues Traveler in 2007, Cover Yourself.

In 2006, Garza played baritone guitar on the Revolting Cocks Cocked and Loaded LP, and Al Jourgensen later added vocals to “Minority Boys Got $” on Garza’s 2008 album Dream Delay.

Garza played guitar and sang back-up vocals on the 2007 John Legend single “Sun Comes Up”.

In 1999, in the midst of his tour popularity, David was voted 2nd just after Stevie Ray Vaughan as Austin Musician of the Decade (Austin Chronicle).
